Question about RAID, software and 6gb ports.

Ok, I'll try to put this in an understandable way

I'm thinking of maybe buying a SATA 3 SSD and I cant figure some things out about my board.

1. From what I understand the 6gb ports on my board are the Marvell ones, and thus Intel RST don't apply to them. Would the Marvell MSU(Marvell storage utility) be the equivalent to Intel RST then for the 6gb ports?

2. I see nothing in my mobo manual about support for raid on the 6gb ports(Marvell), only support on the 3gb ports(Intel). Yet on the driver cd for the board they have Marvell MRU(Marvell RAID utility) not MSU. Why is that? If I have no support for raid on the Marvell ports, shouldn't they have included the MSU and not the MRU?(only MRU listed at ASUS support site aswell)

Also are the Marvell drivers still horrible? even with latest firmware and drivers?(no TRIM still?)

I would love it if some one could clarify this for me.

All the best

Hey mate, I have a few answers, but not all of them, maybe other OCNers might help with the rest.
1.MSU is equivalent to RST from a certain perspective, but they are both representative of the chipset (SATA controller) functionality. As such maybe not all that can be done w/ RST can also be done in MSU.
2.Marvell 9128 does support RAID, so probably your board does too; test by disconnecting your HDD/SSD to avoid loosing data and simply create a RAID array on the ports you want - if it works it works
3.No TRIM yet

Hope this clears up things a little

Yes dragosmp, it did clear up a great deal thank you

I'm still curious though, if there's a difference between the MSU and the MRU or if they have merged the two softwares.

Atm i'm using Intel RST and it shows my 2 SATA2 drives SSD and HDD. Say I were to buy a SATA3 SSD and plug it in to the marvell port, would I then need MSU to see that SSD's information similar to the way Intel RST shows my SATA2 drives? Or would the MRU be able to do so aswell?

The reason I wonder about the MSU and MRU is because on the ASUS support site they only offer the MRU for my board(and an old version to boot). But on the french station-drivers site they only supply the MSU. Are they basically the same software? Perhaps MSU is for those who do not intend to set up RAID and MRU offers what MSU does, aswell as RAID support?

And last but not least , would i see any benefits setting up two SATA2 drives in a RAID on the SATA3(marvell 6gb) ports? or would it be the same as a raid setup on the SATA2 ports?
