Upgrading my current build

Thread Starter
I recently got a job and have some extra money to spend, so I was thinking of upgrading some components of my PC. I was looking to get a new CPU, motherboard, and ram. I feel that my graphics card is still good until christmas.

For CPU, I was think an i7 but other than that I have no idea for the rest of the parts.

I'm mainly use my PC for gaming, small amounts of 3D work, and programming. Any suggestions are welcome. Looking to stay under $500-600.

I'd go with an i5-2500k and a GTX 560Ti, that should be around ~500 after taxes/shipping depending on where you buy it from. Then upgrade the motherboard to support the i5, such as an Asus P67 or Asrock Extreme4 Gen3

The i7 is a complete waste of money for someone who does mostly gaming. I would get a 2500k and save the $100 you would have spent on the i7 towards a 560 ti or better gpu. My current rig plays every game out there on max settings with at 35fps (crysis damn you!)

Those are the 2 components I would've recommended above. While you're at it, get 2x4GB of DDR3 1600mhz ram as well, it's only 50 bucks

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Good idea about the i5-2500, ill look into it. Also the ram is set, I have been looking at. The motherboards also look great.

I was thinking of just upgrading my cpu, motherboard and ram right now, most likely get a new graphics card during chirstmas. Or is there any new products from either nvidia or intel in the next 6 months that would be better?

Check out some of the $500 builds already posted in this forum... you can get a heck of a machine for that price.

Definitely go with an i5 2500k instead of an i7 2600k. You won't need the extra threads going by your usage description.

Then, all you have to do is pick up a decent motherboard, 8gb of ram, a good video card... I'd still go with a 460 GTX at the moment since its $100 cheaper than a 560 ti... and you are good to go!

Total: $475 without graphics card, I suggest to get a better graphics card, the GTX 260 is pretty outdated and it's only DX10.
TWIN Frozr GTX 560 TI: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127594
it's $240, that'd get you to $715 without shipping and taxes, so if you can't get it you can get the graphics card later.

Since everyone is saying I should upgrade my GPU, I was looking at this one. Would this one be good? Or should I spend the extra more and get a 560.

Also how will my PSU stand up with these new parts?
