HP dv6t Quad, 1080P, and Gaming

Thread Starter
I've been seriously considering this laptop with the following specs:

Intel Core i7-2670QM
1GB Radeon HD 6770M
8GB DDR3
1080p screen upgrade (from 1366x768)

Just about everywhere I've read says to upgrade to the 1080p display due to the quality of the screen and obvious resolution advantages, and I really want to.

I understand the 6770M is a decent midrange performer, but my concern is gaming performance on the native 1080 resolution. I plan to play a little SWTOR and Battlefield 3 on this machine...how good (or bad) is non-native resolution scaling nowadays?

I can tell you that BF3 won't work right off the bat. I kept having stutters during beta with the resolution at 720p and all details on low. It might have been a driver issue though. However, all other games I play works fine at 1080p on medium details.

Thanks, looks like I'd have to turn the resolution/details down for some of the more demanding games.

How does, say, 720p look on the 1080p screen? Is the difference of playing at a non-native resolution noticeable on a 15.6" screen?

Just for the heck of it I tried playing NFS (it was free) on my 15" laptop w/ 1080p screen and something like a 310M. I have a 1080p panel, so I dropped the in-game res. to 1366x768 and it looked fine. If you were in Windows and dropped the actual resolution, it would be noticeable on a 15".

Also see notebookcheck.net. They give laptop GPU gaming benchmarks at 1366x768. Not super impressive with a 6770M. My 5770 is good/decent for most games at 1080p.. but its still faster than an overclocked 6870M.

It looked alright. Nothing to go eek.gif at, but nothing to be frown.gif about. Though, I"m not sure how much my opinion really matters on this since I'm not a graphics-phile, if it looks better than HL2, it's fine by me. Though the individual pixels were slightly noticeable if you decide to really look at it.

Solution! How about an A8 AND 6770M graphics?

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1VxunZCxrU[/ame]

Dual graphics is about as good as it'll get in a DV6. The A8 CPU isn't an i5, but fast enough: its the on-board graphics that can give a 6770m an extra kick it needs. Also, my A8-3500M undervolts and overclocks very well, so it'll do fine.

I'm a little skeptical of compatibility (crossfire is finicky enough), but the video looks fine.
