new mobo time. socket? i7?

Thread Starter
so next on my list of upgrades is the mobo. i don't want to go ott but want something that is solid, has good performance and is overclock friendly like my p5k. although the 1366 / 1156 socket thing is confusing. leaning towards 1366 purely for performance so any advice here would be useful. I'm not intending on sli but should my new gtx 580 start struggling it would be nice to have that option in the future. I'm looking at getting an i7, RAM unknown at this point, although the more it holds the better and the addition of an ssd is on the list. price wise im unsure of but £200-£250 seems reasonable. that's all i can think of at the moment. so what are my options?

Both 1366 and 1156 are nearing EOL.

1155 is what you want to be looking at for most applications. If gaming is your primary concern, get a 2500k. If you will be doing more heavy multitasking or content creation, get the 2600k.

Regarding memory, a 2x4GiB set of inexpensive, 1.5v, DDR3-1600 will be the sweet spot.

well after posting this i ran into a friend and had the same conversation. so as 1366/1156 are almost EOL it may be worth waiting for the next die shrink. which according to the press isnt far around the corner. i wasnt planning on a mobo/chipset/ram upgrade until the new year anyway. rumour has it intels forthcoming ivybridge will be on an 1155 socket. might be worth waiting to see what happens on release. if its nothing to write home about or the prices are too high it will just mean everything else will have a slightly cheaper price tag.
