No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, natta!

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
This is my 1st system build;
GA-990FXA-UD3 MOBO
AMD FX-8150 CPU
Corsair Hydro H60 Liquid Cooling
MSI Radeon 6870 Hawk Video card
Antec P183 case
Seasonic X-850 watt modular PSO
G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1866Mhz, 16Gb

My 1st & thereafter attempts to get a 1st time post have been fruitless. No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, Natta!

What I've done to diagnose problem;
1. Checked that I had all required power plugged into the right places(to the very best of my knowledge anyway). Unplugged & re plugged in each. No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, Natta!
2. Pulled all memory, repower up. No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, Natta!
3. Put 1 8GB memory stick back in. No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, Natta!
4. Powered off unplugged PSU & cleared CMOS. Powered back up. No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, Natta!
5. Powered back off/unplugged PSU, removed CMOS battery, let sit for 2 minutes, put battery back in, powered back up. No Beeps, no posts, no display,,, Natta!
8. Case fans, PWM fan, & video card fans are up & spinning just fine. H60 water pump running. Front USB ports are working with a cheap set of speaker. So I can hear any beeps ... if they ever occur. There is a power light on 1 of the speakers so I know they are getting power from the USB 2.0 ports.

This leads me to believe that the Mobo is bad or the CPU is bad, but being a 1st time builder maybe I haven't done enough checking. Could anyone help me out here with any more suggestion, anything else I could check. I'm pulling my hair out, what's left of it that is. LOL!!

Thanks in advance!!

You need to update the bios on your motherboard to support your newer CPU. To do this you'll need an older CPU, if you don't have one then you may have to borrow from a friend or buy a new one, use it to flash and then return it.

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3894#ov
"To enable AM3+ AMD FX-Series CPU support, please update your motherboard with the most current BIOS found in your motherboard’s download section."

As a side note, in order to get POST/boot beeps you need to use the motherboard speaker which is either integrated onto the motherboard or is a plug on dongle that most likely came with the case and not any other generic 3.5mm/USB etc speaker. No matter what speaker you use won't get beeps if you don't use mobo speakers.

Also welcome to OCN and don't forget to fill in your system details and give rep + where due.

But I thought the new GigaByte GA-990FXA-UD3 MOBO's were supposed to support the new bulldozer chips right out of the box??? No?? Explain.

I have an AMD athlon cpu in my other machine, but i think thats an AM2 socket. Will an AM2 socket fit in the am3+ socket? I kind of don't think so, but please confirm that if you can please.

Wont work. You need am3. Just get a cheap AM3 sempron. Its like $30

Gigabytes website suggests otherwise... Most likely what happened is that the motherboard was released before the release of bulldozer chips but allowed support of AM3 chips up till that point. When bulldozer was released a BIOS update allowed use of bulldozer chips. The same happened with Intel's x58, for boards released early on into the market that didn't come factory flashed with newer firmware they didn't provide support for the 980x CPUs when they first came out without the user flashing the firmware.

No it won't work, the board only supports AM3/3+ CPUs.

Now I'm confused :>) What do you mean it's in the BIOS? Just exactly what is the process to install BIOS update anyway? Don't you have to have something in order to apply the updates?
