How come my mobo manufacturer specs are different?

I have an older computer that I'm going to set up as a File server/HTPC. Its a Compaq Presario SR1215CL from originally purchased in 2004. I need to upgrade the OS from XP, but there mobo maker says that it can use up to 2Gb PC2700. However the compaq website says that it can only have a total of 1Gb. If you take a look at the "memory" on this page, it even says that the PC manufacturer's maximum may vary.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...=c00069442#doc

Why is that? What can I do to make it be able to make use of the full 2Gb that they say the motherboard is capable of? Maybe a bios update?

I would go according to the manufacturer. I have seen companies put lower values for things like ram because they put the number they offer, not the max the board can take.

So you're saying you'd go with the 2Gb option instead of the 1Gb? You'd go with the mobo maker instead of the PC maker? What if they had them make the bios so that you can't upgrade further? That way, you'll be sure to have to buy a new PC a lot sooner...

I'm wondering if that's why I can't upgrade my friend's PC past 1.25Gb. He's got 1.5Gb in there, but its only registering 1.25Gb. In windows it shows all of it, but it says that only 1.25 is being used.

Well if it has a custom bios then it is hard telling. But I know that the limit the manufacturer specifies isn't always true. Lenovo says that my laptop only supports 4gb and I have 8gb in it right now.

yes I am sure. I have run VMs on it with 4gb of ram allocated to them. It shows 8gb, and it says 7.85 are usable, that is because I have onboard video though.

That's probably because you're friend's PC has onboard video, and a portion of the ram is being used along with it.

Good point. Isn't it kind of a drawback to have that going on? I mean its got to be slower than say a real card with its own dedicated RAM... right? Or is it just as good, in its own way?
