Scythe Ultra Kaze 120mm

Thread Starter
I have a Scythe Ultra Kaze 120mm exhaust fan in my case that is connected to a molex, through a 3 pin header adapter. I was wondering if there is any way I could control the speed of that fan because the only other header is on the lower part of my motherboard and the front intake fan is currently connected to that one.

Do fans run at 100% when connected to a molex, by default? This thing is pretty loud but it moves a ton of air. I just don't want to ruin the thing by unnecessarily running it at 100%.

I am ordering a new motherboard today that will have more fan headers but for the time being I want to resolve the problem.

Yes, fans run at 100% by default on molex. What I would recommend (and what I have done myself) is to buy a fan controller (I went with the Scythe Q-12) and just connect it to that. That will give you the most control over all of your fans and overall should make your life easier

Is this an inexpensive alternative? I mean, I knew about this alternative but I was just checking to see if I can just do a cut and connect type deal.

Also, are there any fan controllers that don't control a billion fans? I will only have 3 case fans running.

Yeah, it should be fairly inexpensive, as long as you don't get a controller that controls a billion fans
That said, mine was only $25.
The Sunbeam Rheobus is a pretty widely used inexpensive fan controller. It was my second choice to the Q-12

$13 shipped seems pretty sweet to me

That is a pretty sweet deal. Thanks bro. I was going to put a media reader in my 5.25 bay but I can just use the USB one I have right now.

One more thing, will the Ultra Kaze I have running right now be ok at 100% for a couple of days? I don't want it to die on me. The new motherboard I ordered arrives on the 25th and that has 2 fan headers on it, so I will be able to control it via Afterburner or whatever.

I had 3 Ultra Kazes churning away at 100% for over a year without bearing failures.

It'll be fine.
