Having problems with Bulldozer and Windows...

Thread Starter
I have been having problems ever since I installed the FX-8120 chip into my system. Also, my motherboard has been having some issues with voltages. When I set a voltage in the BIOS and save and restart it posts back showing the voltage around .05v under what I set it at. It does this no matter what voltage I set it at. Another thing is that when I overclock the Bulldozer and go in to windows and try to do a windows index rating, it locks up or restarts. I have tried doing the windows rating at 5.0GHz, 4.8Ghz, 4.5Ghz, 4.2Ghz, but it will get to the end of the cpu performance test and will lock up. It posts just fine though and I've even ran cinebench at 4.8GHz and it does fine. But windows rating locks up everytime I try to do it. Any suggestions?

I know that I have been having a lot of problems with my MSI 990FXA GD-80 motherboard as far as setting voltages, updating drivers, and using MSI control center. So I went ahead and order ASUS Crosshair V board and it should be here on monday. I hope that with this board I will be able to set the voltages and the board will set them to what I specifies unlike the MSI board. Also, I am hoping that it will fix the kinks with windows as far as the drivers and utilities.

With the system I have now (FX-8120, MSI 990FXA GD-80), I have been able to overclock to 5.0GHz with setting the voltage to 1.549v and it posts just fine but when I go back into the bios, the hardware monitor reads the cpu voltage is at 1.50v. I have disabbled all the power saving features on the cpu so the voltage should be at what i set it at but its not. The system posts just fine everytime but when I go into windows its like everything is out of wack. Does anybody have any idea what is going on with my system and do you think the new ASUS board i ordered will solve the problem? I am still able to exchange the cpu for a new one if I need to but I dont rely think its that. What I think it is, is the drivers for the chipsets that are causing windows to not function correctly and I am hoping that with the new ASUS board that the drivers will work properly and should not have any problems. I also brought the frequency down to 4.2GHz and had the voltage higher than it should have been for this speed just to make sure that it was stable and it would not work. I have done many different frequencies and voltage to try and get it right but it will not work. I even set the frequency at 4.2GHz and the voltage on auto and it posts just fine but windows locks up on index rating. I know windows index rating is not that stressfull of a test so this should not be a problem but for some reason it it.

Please help me out with my problem. All comments and suggestions are appreciated. If you have any idea at all please let me know what you think might be the problem.

Thank you very much for your time and your help.

There seem to be many people having similar issues. I would contact AMD and MSI and see what the resolution process is. Could be the MB, the BIOS and or the CPU.

i havent even gotten to the stage of overclocking my 8120, right now i get bsod during system rating just like yours. But ive also been running into other strange problems. Often the 8120 will give full work load to either core 0 and 1 only or cores 6 and 7. even when compressing very large files, making the whole process very slow. im also monitoring cpu gpu and network on meters on my desktop, and im noticing everying droping at once for about 15 seconds, of which nothing happens. this isnt exactly a freeze as everything sort-of responds, but 15 seconds later everything bumps back up and starts chugging again. I thought this was my mother board so i switch down to another am3+ board by asus without embedded memory, clean instalation of win7, and problems still persist.

The problem is either windows, the agesa code, or the cpu itself.

I have the same problem on a TA990XFE motherboard with the FX4100. I get a 7.2 stock (18x200) or 7.3 (21x200)

If I increase the FSB and run it....BSOD, reboot, or it locks up but the mouse still works but clicking and keyboard commands do nothing.
