Any way to play .avi files on PS3?

Thread Starter
I installed cfw the other day, since I never really played online (or even play at all), so I thought there might be some usefull programs for the PS3 cfw that I could use and much to my disapointment I can't find anything that would allow me to play my .avi files...

I hope this isn't breaking any rules since it's cfw, but cfw doesn't mean it's used for piracy, I buy games for PC, I just have a PS3 for movies etc, I borrowed like 3 games for it and I never really played it (I did cut it up on the other hand- another thread biggrin.gif)

I did try the multiman program since I heard it plays .avi files, but it freezes my PS3 when I scroll to the video tab frown.gif

So, is there any program that plays .avi files?

What are your .avi files encoded with? I always play .avi files encoded with the xvid codec and it plays fine. Just make sure the xvid codec is enable in the settings menu of the PS3 and the files should play.

All I found is the DivX VOD Registration Code, should I go to the website and register that? Do I have to be connected to the internet with my PS3, do I have to download anything?

Ok, I found out that I can play some of the movies, but some of them are "unsuported data" :/

What are the videos that say "unsupported data" encoded with? You might need to re-encode them to play.

How exactly do I check that? And one more question, I used blackbox ftp to transfer videos to my PS3, but the PS3 doesn't see them, I think it's because they don't have the .MTH and .FTH files that PS3 creates when I copy the video from my flash drive.

I could use the flash drive to transfer videos one by one, but I already have them on my PS3 HDD, so I just need them to show up in the video tab. I can click triangle and view all on the flash drive, but how do I "view all" for HDD?

The videos are in the same directory as the one I copied from flash drive (this one works fine)

Oh and any good re-encoding programs?

i dont know if it will work for cfw, but i have my ps3 and computer on the same wireless network.

i downloaded "ps3 media server" on my PC and it lets my ps3 see the files on my hard drive and also lets me play .avi, .mkv, etc.

any files i download, it plays it.

you need to turn on ps3 media server and let it acknowledge your ps3 is on as well. then go to video on the mdeia bar and it should pop up

if there encoded "properly" all avi files should play on ps3
mkv files don't play
I ended getting a dedicated blu ray player that reads external NTSF (no more 4GB file limit) hard drives and plays everything, including mkv's

I have dB Poweramp music converter( Trial ) and it has a windows shell extension that lets me see the video properties on any media file. And from my knowledge, there is not way to "View All" from the hdd. The way I play movies from my PS3 is I downloaded a program called Tversity on my computer. Tversity enables me to stream movies that are my computer HDD to my PS3. Only catch is that both systems have to be on the same network. You also must enable "Search for Media Severs" in the network settings tab I believe so the PS3 can see the media server that Tversity created. And for re-encoding video files I would recommend Virutal Dub. It's free, encodes multiple formats, and is pretty fast.

I could have swore AVIs worked fine natively when I used my PS3..

About encoding, Handbrake is pretty good. I would recommend that.

I use ps3 media server as well and it's great. I haven't come across any file type that it won't stream.
