[BBC] Could a Russia-US rail tunnel be built? - Page 5

Prety sure a flight to Alaska from the US48 costs more than a flight streight to Russia.

Will Russia send crude oil to the United States? There are a lot of oil companies in Alaska iirc.

This is kinda old news overall.

Yes, this is mostly for freight, a line would be built in Russia connecting to the tunnel. Think, a ship will do about 18mph in open ocean moving containers. The train will do 70-200mph (cargo/passenger). Less time waiting on the goods is a massive win for the company's.

2 things..

1. WOOD!!! don't believe me go to Home Depot. Our timber industry is hurting bad.
we have started out-sourcing/importing wood from Russia cheaper than what we can get it in our own country. I am from a strange little town in Northern California called Quincy. In Quincy the Economy is strongly based off of the production of timbers for building supply. Our mill is the biggest Mill west of the Mississippi River, and it is slowly been cutting back for the last 10 years. Regulation, Liability, and Gas prices have been the main Cause of Sierra Pacifistic's Demise. Some people dont Realize that The forest is naturally thinned out by fire, and now that we put out these fires the forest gets over grown and even in some cases diseased. Logging can be a good thing for our environment when it is done correctly, but due the state of our economy, it is just plain cheaper to buy wood from a less regulated country like Russia.

2. WTH... Lets build a Gigantic tunnel in an area that is notorious for Earth Quakes!
My Dad was a Lifer in the Navy, for 2 years we were Stationed in a VERY VERY small town called

Adak Alaska <----COPY/Paste----> http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl
It was so Notorious for Earth Quakes that our houses were built on Rollers.
Not the kind of place, I would like to build a under water tunnel...

EDIT: this is the reason I have a irrational fear of bunk-beds. lol and probly the reason my IQ is only 106

We need an AMTRAK expansion, not this random train tunnel to russia. If the US gets a legit and fast interstate train system it would do so much than this.

LOL, lots of stuff *could* be built. Personally, I'd rather see better inter- and intra-city mass transit systems. However given how large of a land mass the US is, that's pretty impractical.

This has been talked about for along time...it will never happen because there is no gain from it. Trade? Horray...the frieght is now in Alaska or Siberia. What good would that do? It would not even help the local economies since siberia and Alaska produce the same things...they would not get anything new.

Plus they could toss anything on a boat and get it there bout as fast without worrying about earthquakes and the like.
