It's going to be use mainly for freight. I don't know if you have ever tried shipping something massive over an ocean using air/sea. It cost a fortune. Trains would be so much cheaper and quicker than the 18MPH ships

and like I said...what are you going to do with the frieght once it is at the end of the tunnel? build and maintain thousands of Km of track to get the goods to where they need to go? That is were a boat becomes cheaper. It can sent pretty much right where the goods are needed since production centers are built on the coasts for this reason.

We currently send everything to Alaska by boat or plane now since rail isn't fiesable...well, beside the oil pipeline.

There would already be track in that area. They would just have to build another 10-50km of track to connect them.

This would be purely commercial. Not for "going to Russia for the weekend". And it will never happen.

This will never happen. The so called 'Russian-American' relations reset has been unreset because of the 'dead end' that the ABM has become pitting NATO and encircling Russia and China.

This just in:
An underground train tunnel has been opened in Alaska, going into Russia, successfully connecting nothing to nowhere...

Would be good for freight, here in Australia we double the shipping containers 2 high on trains once they get to South Aus as there is no bridges/tunnels ect all the way to Perth on the west coast.
And unlike ships trains travel from A to B, people dont realise that most ships will do a loop, eg Singapore, Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney ect over and over. It would get freight to those places a lot cheaper than ship/air, and hopefully be good for the local economies.
