hey there. so i'd like to get some opinions on what the best AMD chip for gaming is.

there's the tried and true 955 BE for $120
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103808

then there's the Zosma chip, which is a PII x4 based off of Thuban, which is more developed than Deneb (i hear the IMC is better) for $125, only $5 more than the 955 BE
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103995

in the same vein, Llano is more refined, hence the potential appeal of the $90 Athlon II x4 based on Llano
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103945

i'm curious as to what people think about these chips in regards to gaming. i'm not really into more cores, unless they help for gaming, and by and large i don't believe that they do. hence focusing on the quad cores.

Zosma being able to unlock to 6 core also doesn't really appeal to me. i'm most interested in being able to OC well and having solidly developed hardware.

so, thoughts on these chips? FX, obviously, is regrettably out of the running as far as price/performance goes, unless something had changed recently.

I would be leaning towards the 955 simply because they have already proved themselves to be great gaming chips. Most will hit 4ghz+ unlike Llano.

For price and such you can't beat the 955. The next up would be the 960T; and then the 1055T.

That's about it. 955 is #1.

Schmuckley, heh, yeah, i hear that. it's a shame, it really is. i was so excited for FX, too. i'm keeping my options open, hence this thread, but so much time has passed now that it's hard to justify even $100 on an AMD chip that is generations out of date now when i can get a 2500K for $180 at microcenter.

still, i can dream and make note, then i'll compare when the time comes. =) i'll give AMD until IB comes out to get FX together, but by then i'll need to make a choice.

thanks for the input everyone!

*Edit* ganja, so you'd take the 955 over the 960T, even when it's just a 5 dollar different? does the 960T not OC as well?

I voted for the 955 but I think the 980BE is a great CPU for gaming.

Zosma unlock is not a guarantee. Sometimes when one or two cores on a x6 will not properly function, they will just disable them and sell it as a 4 core.
They will also take a perfectly fine x6 CPUs and disable 2 cores and sell it as a 4 core if there is more demand for x4 than x6 CPUs.

Depending on which batch you get, it will either unlock or it wont.

So if you want a x6 then don't buy the Zosma expecting it to unlock.
