Hmm.. would a toxic 6950 --> to MSI twin frozr 7870 be a pointless upgrade?

I can't stand the toxic anymore. I have to use a custom fan profile in trixx in order to keep it under 70 degrees while playing BF3. But at the expense of that, the card sounds like a jet engine at anything higher than 45% fan speed.

It's a downgrade. And in the 80's and low 90's is fine, unless your volts are to high.

@chrisys93

yeh i would agree. just make the fan profile a bit more easy going. i let my core temp get a bit further into the 70's than that. i find at night the fan gets pretty annoying above 34% when watching films or videos in my case so ive set it up for that accordingly. when im gaming in the day the fan doesn't bother me right up to about 65% because i dont notice it while concentrating and with the sound of games (i dont really play my games that loud either!). the only time my fan really annoys me is if im gaming at night without headphones and its going 65%+. still i dont care that much. Anyways i know you weren't asking for my opinion all that. was just ranting sorry lol.

I found this which might give you some idea of the differences: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/548?vs=509

That's a comparrison of a 6970 and 7870. As you have the Toxic 6950 you basically have a 6970 right? Well if its unlocked and overclocked i suppose... So i thought that would be a more fair comparrison. Doesn't seem to be much between them really. I'm not sure you would feel that happy about that upgrade for what will probably be no noticeable performance difference for the potential of a quieter fan. Maybe rethink your case layout with wires and stuff. You could add some extra case fans and redirect the airflow a bit. I added a single fan to the front of my case and my cpu temp dropped by 8c on average! There's food for thought thumb.gif

7870 seems to be on par with a 580 and can go toe to toe with a 7950. Plus the overclocking ability and power usage is better. I think I'll go for a 7870 but I want to see what Nvidia has to offer for this range of video cards before I buy.

Don't know if this was answered but, what would be a stable overclock be for mem and core clocks? I've seen people with over 900MHz as the core clock, how are the temps for it? Thanks.

totally depends on your card. i currently run 930/1375 on default volts and im sure i could run higher. most people like to run the memory clock at 1375 as that is the speed of the memory clock on the 6970. look at the members list on the front page for an idea of what people are running. im pretty sure anyone could run something like 900/1375 on default volts unless they have a really bad card. mine hits around 7Xc while gaming and the fan will be somewhere around 60-65% at that temp. again - thats gonna all be dependant on your setup. stuff varies a lot for everyone. so you could probably safely run something like 900/1375 on default volts with a custom fan profile holding all the temps down below 90c. if you run gpuz you can see all 4 temps for the card. i wouldn't recommend going straight in for that though. im not sure of your level of experience but check out the link to the overclocking guide on the front page to. its pretty straight forward with graphics cards. just be patient and take things so slow so you know when you're hitting limits and can back off a bit. also don't forget that powertune needs to be set to 20% for default clock speeds and sometimes higher for higher clock speeds. i think ive figured that i need 25% for my settings. good luck and just ask here if you run into any problems or are unsure of anything! i'll do my best to help but there are others here who are probably more experienced than me that im sure will help to thumb.gif

Hey thanks for the suggestion +rep biggrin.gif I was able to increase the clocks to 900/1375 on default volts. Also I was able to get a 8-15fps increase in BF3. But I'm using MSI Afterburner to set the power tune/limit to 25%. So I'm not sure if this is helping or not. With my custom fan profile I hit around 67c with 64-70% fan speed and that's from playing BF3 on ultra.

thats a very worthy framerate increase - especially for playing on ultra settings! my framerate would be terrible with ultra settings im sure! i used to be able to play at high settings with hbao @1920x1080 really smoothly - like 50-60fps constant with vsync but now i cant do that with a mixture of medium and high settings for some reason. i think its the bios in this motherboard as i had these weird slow down issues with it that the last bios update seemed to clear up. hoping they just tune it better so i can get the sort of performance i should be getting again! anyways - going off topic a bit there! if you want to figure out what powertune settings you need its easy. run furmark with desired clock speeds but powertune at 0%. have gpuz running in the background at the same time to. run the 1080 preset. look at how much power the card is drawing and see if the clock speeds are throttling down below the speed you set them at. take note of what happened. now try again with powertune at 20%. you should see that the card draws more power and the clocks dont throttle down so much, if at all! now try with 25% powertune and see if it draws anymore power and see if the clock speeds stay at what you set them at. basically you keep going up from 20% until the card reaches the maximum amout of power its gonna draw and the clock speeds stop throttling down under load.

also you shouldn't have this other problem with afterburner as it does a good job at holding the powertune, clocks and custom fan profile in place. but i find that sometimes my powertune resets when i restart the computer or on loading custom clock speeds with trixx. also trixx will say im using my custom fan profile but its actually on auto (i can always tell cos it sits at 24% most of the time on auto) so i have to switch it to manual and then back to custom. just a little heads up if you ever decide to use trixx instead of afterburner!

also what sort of framerates you averaging on bf3 and what res are you playing it at?
