and I don't think the "repaired" BIOS # changed ... so as far as I know all of us TOXIC owners are running BIOS version #013.012.000.020.000000 I think ?

yes i think you may be right. i am running that bios. when i tried to flash with the ones sapphire sent it wouldn't let me because it said i already had that bios. didnt some people flash with it though? either way it didn't fix the issue. +20% powertune is the way.

Places selling Toxic 6950's in UK found with a simple google search if anyone's interested (dont really seem like we're suffering from the shortage tongue.gif): http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=6950+toxic&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=zxj&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&prmd=imvns&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&biw=1920&bih=930&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=558733251803242267&sa=X&ei=rivcToOhCoSmsgbz-Z2LBw&ved=0CF0Q8wIwAA#scoring=tps

I bought mine used online for $260. So if I plan on unlocking the Shaders, would all that is required be a simple switch of the switch on the graphics card? Are the updates from the sapphire toxic website recommended if I plan to do so?

unless a previous owner changed anything then yes. you just flip the bios switch. check with gpu-z. the stock bios has 1408 shaders and the other one has 1536 shaders - thats if you can unlock them on that card, not all of these unlock remember, but we have a very good success rate as mentioned earlier - 84% out of us lot i believe?

as for the updates - are you talking about graphics drivers? if so they are just the drivers off the amd site as far as im aware so it doesn't matter. i have looked on the sapphire site before and they aren't always up to date either so just get them from amd wink.gif

good luck smile.gif

Wow ... $260 USED ? ... makes me feel better about my Deal from NewEgg, $270 NEW and w/ TWO FREE Games, (Dirt3 & Deus Ex: H R) Rkingsmiley.png Oh well, I know that they are Very Difficult to be had, so not an unwarranted price to pay for one of the best GPU's on the Market I suppose, even used ... and welcome to TOXIC Ownership thumb.gif

As for " UPDATES " not really anything important from Sapphire, but check AMD for latest versions of CCC and Drivers under ...

... on the Front Page as well.

SAPPhIRE TriXX is the optimal performance overclocking utility for your AMD RADEON graphics card,
allowing you to monitor, tune & save different settings of key parameters for the card.

Step #2 - You can install the CD software, but to be honest the WIN 7 driver the system auto loads for you should work too, so you could skip to Step 3 I guess ?
Step #3 - With things running, install GPU-Z and/or TriXX software or both ... then open the programs to review the Factory defaults of your card, note shaders and Core clocks etc.
Step #4 - In GPU-Z or TriXX SAVE your factory BIOS of the card. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP. You might just need it in case something goes wrong and need to reinstall the factory BIOS file in case position #2 Unlocked BIOS FAILS, and flipping the switch back to position #1 won't reload the original BIOS for some reason. THIS shouldn't happen, but better SAFE and SAVED than sorry and SOL.
Step #5 - Shut Down Windows and turn off your Computer.
Step #6 - FLIP the little Dual BIOS switch near the back plate / SLI Bridge area to position #2.
Step #7 - Turn on Computer and reboot up.
Step #8 - Re-open TriXX and/or GPU-Z and check your Shaders ... if it's 1536, CONGRATS your card UNLOCKED and you have a HD-6970 now no BIOS FLASH required it's ON the card from Sapphire ... if it's still 1408, Bummer dude no Factory Un-Lock , you could still then try FLASHING it to Unlock it, but YES this can be slightly risky and CAN void your warranty if you BRICK the card by Flashing it, most likely you have a card that Will NOT unlock, remember it's NOT 100% Guaranteed.

Sapphire HD-6950 TOXIC Edition Basic OverClocking Guideline, Thanks to LA_Kings_Fan

Also PLEASE keep in mind it's different for each individual card/GPU chip. Same like CPU OverClocking, some get lucky and can push it to the Limit, while others get a dud that are barely good for anything over factory stock, it's the luck of the draw and can be hit or miss.

As you know the Sapphire HD-6950 TOXIC cards come FACTORY over clocked at 880 MHz Core clock, and 1300 MHz Memory clocks, and you should have a VERY GOOD (66-75%) chance at Un-Locking the Shader Clocks to 1538, or HD-6970 levels.

IF you haven't already done it, the first thing I'd do is see if that card can UnLock or not ... use my Step-by-Step Guide here - http://www.overclock.net/amd-ati/1136272-unlocked-sapphire-hd6950-dirt3-edition-6.html#post15253189, it's easy and can UnLock a potential 7-10% boost in performance.

NOW, as for OC'ing the TOXIC even more, you should be able to be stable at stock voltage, which is already at 1.175v, somewhere within ...
= 900-960 MHz Core Clocks
= 1375-1450 MHz Memory Clocks
= Shaders Unlocked to 1538 via the BIOS Switch of course

with a slight bump up to 1.25v MAXIMUM don't over-volt above this, you should be close to the cards limits at ...
= 960-1000 MHz Core Clocks
= 1450-1500 MHz Memory Clocks
= Shaders Unlocked to 1538 via the BIOS Switch of course

I'd also suggest you review OrangeBunnies Sapphire 6950 Toxic 2GB Overclocking & Unlocked thread.

ALSO this OverClockersClub Review I think took the TOXIC to it's outter most limits and he got lucky with a very strong GPU chip, but he got the TOXIC to 1010 MHz core clock & 1500 MHz Memory clocks.

To the 6970 owners (or anyone with knowledge): Since the 6970 is 6 pin + 8 pin does that mean the card can tolerate higher voltages better? I mean the larger connections means the card needs more power so there is a line of thought that raises the question. Better quality components on the card etc.

There data on this?

Yeah that's what this means in a nutshell ... as our TOXIC HD-6950's also have this same 6+8 pin ... it's to handle the stock voltage of 1.25v better and potentially overvolting of course.

It means the cards are better designed and usually have better quality components to handle the extra juice, as compared to the standard HD-6950's that come with stock volts of 1.1v and tend to have harder times reaching that 1 GHz core threashold ... not sure about "DATA" out there on this, but I know I read of it in one or two of the TOXIC reviews that brought it up.

The same is true, if you look at the MSI "LIGHTNING" edition series of cards ... they usually have a greater ability and/or come overvolted stock and have a higher pawer draw also. The MSI GTX-480 LIGTNING I had for a short bit had an 8+8 pin connection, it was a real hog, but those cards could overclock like a son-of-female-dog.

So it's rather odd though, that while the TOXIC 6950 can also overclock like a son-of-female-dog, that in general most 6970's aren't particularly strong overclockers ? I mean it's often where the TOXIC can overclock better than and past that of the 6970.

Ok so the max voltage on my card is roughly the same as it would be on the 6950 Toxic series then. Still want to stay at or below 1.25v.

I think this would be the safest route until you can research the card more and read additional reviews and testings as they come out ... remember this is a NEW card from Sapphire, it's only been on the market for about a month or so, we (or at least I) don't know an awful lot about it just yet.

There's been 4 reviews on it so far only ..

ok so 11.11c is officially pissing me off, and so is Heaven bench which keeps crashing

I keep getting these moronic bsods at (code 116 or 3b related to atimanager). I've disabled CCC but I still get the stupid 116 codes. Before I installed hotfix c, I followed BradleyWs thread. Uninstalled 11.11a and wiped all left over files even from the registry, and cleanly installed hotfix c. I mean BF3 (and its 1.4gb of usage on ultra) run fine on 880, but TW2 is much smoother at 1000 (and its 1.5gb of usage on Uber). So In general I'm angry. My benching program of choice is pissing me off, I wanted to put a challenge for you guys and post on HWbot, see if you guys could beat my scores on the Extreme settings and how much does each system deviate (as heaven is a cpu independent program AFAIK).

Well anyways. I don't know about you guys, but the sapphires trixx software is one of the most god awful programs I've ever used. back in 11.08 (which was like the golden driver imo, not a single problem, I was so happy with switching to AMD).

But now Trixx (which I hated to begin with, besides their adaptive fan program) Keeps throwing that idiot ULPS (ultra low power state) thing at my face for my cfx setup. So all I used to do before is kill the task after checking the ULPS box and bam OCing works like magic. Now it just refused to respond, even after restarting the program and the check box ticked.

RIVA TUNER FTW. I signed that EULA from msi, happily OCing again to my hearts content

also @ LA, dude I need to recheck Overclockerclubs review. Did they ever mention stress testing it? What was their stabliity gaurantee? If it doesnt pass OCCT for atleast 30 minutes with less than 5 errors and shader complexity at or near max, i'd classify that as unstable. I've seen sapphire owners (one guy with quad) go up to 1050core stablily and that seems to be the norm on hwbot. Again we shouldn't really worry, the volterra 6+1 phase setup should do fine for 1.3+, our gibggest enemy here is heat. we arent going to blow the vrms so I'd put in as much voltage as I possibly can. My probelm is I dont' think I can overclcok both the memory and the core with 1.3, I keep failin g at 1050/1600. I may have dud gpus :/

also afaik even the toxics, the 6970s generally do clock higher than the 6950s do, even the lightings nd toxics, but thats asfar as I've seen redface.gif
