First intel gaming build

Thread Starter
I'm looking to build the top of the line gaming machine but not sure which MB and CPU would be the best, I know of the rampage III, but is there a better MB? Now I'm confused with the CPU, I don't care how much it will cost

For CPU/Motherboard I would go with a i5 2500K, unless you must have an i7 2600K. and go with a ASUS MAXIMUS IV EXTREME

If you want suggestions of GPU, ram, cases, coolers:
590 SLI (if you want bragging right)
580 x3
8GBs DDR3
Silverstone FT02
Noctua DH14
SSD for boot
2TB of storage

IIRC 580s in Tri-SLi are better than the 590s in Quad-SLi.

True, he said top of the line and 590 popped into mind first before triple 580s

Lol. I gotcha. OP, I would advise Tri-SLi 580s. The EVGA SC 1.5GB ones are great. Though you can go for 3GB ones as well.

6990s and 6970s are great too just because the scaling is almost flawless. I would think running 3x580s or 3x6970s would be impossible on air though. Even with fans running 100%, I would expect them to be temp throttled.

I really want a top of a CPU as well, I don't think an i5 is top, what about the i7 990 extreme edition? So that MB is better then then the rampage III for gaming and everything else?

The i5-2500k is a generation newer than the i7-990x. They perform about the same (except for intense multithreaded apps) but the 2500k is only $200 where the 990x is around $1000. If you really want to blow a hole in your pocket and get the performance that comes along with it wait for SB-E. It's releasing soon, price estimates are at $1000 and rumors are putting it up to 35% faster than the 990x.

That i7-2600k looks pretty sweet and it's only about 90 more then the2500, what MB do you recommend? The rampage III?
