nvidia mobile gpu clock too low

guys i have a toshiba satellite lappy with 525m nvidia grpahics...the gpu is supposed to be decent for a laptop n ive seen benchmarks where u get 40 fps with crysys in medium settings but i always used to get in 20s...so i checked my gpu clockspeed and it was 475mhz whereas in most other laptops the same gpu is set at 600mhz and evn nvidia site says 600...wats the prob here? i tried overcloking it to 580mhz and it worked without artifacts and i got 43 fps in crysys...temps reached 80c..
and in furmark after 5 mins of burn in test it used to reach 75c in 475mhz n in 580mhz 5 mins it reached 85c and suddenlly laptop turned off without the shutdown screen....i started it again and reduced the clocks to usual and alls fine...
previosly i had oced it at 520mhz and there ws no heat prob either..
my question is:
1.why is the clock set so low when the recomended it 125 above that ?
2.since its set so low,is it safe to oc it to 600 mhz if i have a cooling pad to ease the temps?

The GPU will underclock itself if the temperatures are too high to try to ease the temperatures.

As long as you have reasonable temperatures, you can get it to 600.

but y is it set so low originally ? is there any power drawing issues with laptop i shud be aware of? and is 85c too high for a lappy cus ive heard cases where it works at 90c whearas mine just shutdown at 85..
ps : its new and caused no probs before oc so fan n heatsink are fine

It's set that low originally probably because of the high heat. If it was at the stock settings, it would probably overheat.

Generally you don't want a GPU to get above 80-85c for 24/7 use.

Some laptop manufacturers underclock GPUs on purpose, as many people don't know better and it improves battery life. You can just overclock it back. I wouldn't run furmark on a laptop, as long as everything's stable in your games you should be fine.

thnks everyone oced to 580 and running at 80c in crysys,45fps med settings...i want to knw if running at 80c for long will damage the gpu or other nearby components? i heard that unlike cpu,gpu is not socketed in laptops and its solder joints can easily melt and the gpu wil fail..does this usually happen ??

i know lappys shudnt be overcloked much but mine is below the stock speed so im considering it but do u think manufacturers might have done it to protect other components or cus of the low quality materials used inside ??
after all the gpu shud atleast be able to run at stock speeds right if not oced? help
