Q6600 running "hot" - 48c idle, 60c load

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

I recently got me a Used Q6600 off eBay for $80 (great condition by the way) to replace my E7400. After getting it all up and running, everything seemed just peachy, however checking CoreTemp revealed some pretty hot temps.

At idle it sits around 45-48 degrees C
Max load it bumps up to 56-60 degrees C

I am using a stock cooler and I did the "blob" method to apply the thermal paste. However I will admit now that I didn't totally clean off the old thermal grease before installing the Q6600. Would that be my issue?

Any input and advice is appreciated

That isn't hot at all. Mine idles 40s and loads at mid to to high 60s.

Also did you set the TjMax? What is it a B3 or G0? B3 needs to be 80 for the TjMax and 90C for the G0

I second Lord Xeb/Linkin , temps seem pretty normal considering you're using the stock cooler.

TJ MAX @ 100C, G0 revision

Keep in mind that I am running stock clock @ 2.4 GHz

I'm not really worried about it, but I'm just wandering if I could get better performance if it was running cooler (since the CPU scales back performance at "hot" temps).

Just wanting to get the most performance out of my "new" CPU

These things are tanks but, they run rather warm. Normal on a stock cooler.

And yes, clean the old TIM off very well before reapplying: use 70%= alcohol and non-lint fabric or coffee filters for this.

My B3 idled at 55C with the stock cooler.

Aftermarket heatsink took care of that. Sitting at 5C above ambient idle and around 55-60C load at 1.385v
