Issues with my GTX 580 Lightning :(

Thread Starter
So a couple of days ago while in-game, I realized that my Lightning as been stuttering quite a bit during gaming. My framerate never drops (playing COD4), and is always a steady 91FPS. I have checked again and again the framerate when it does its stutter, and that is never the issue.

It happens about once every 10 second, sometimes more, so it is extremely frustrating. I have uninstalled drivers via driver sweeper, upgraded my drivers, downgraded my drivers, overclocked, underclocked, stock clocked, reinstalled windows, reseated, and even switched BIOS.

No matter what I do, it stutters. I popped in my trusty GTX 460 1GB and my gameplay is smooth as butter. No stuttering whatsoever, solid 91FPS in COD4.

I also know that it is not COD4 at fault because my GTX 580 stutters in every game I play, including COD:BO, Metro 2033, CODMW2, BFBC2, Crysis 1, 2, and Warhead.

Is it RMA time?

looks like you have tried pretty much everything, I would just RMA it and put in that 460 till u get a new one.

Bleh.

If MSI deems my card defective, what are the chances of me getting a brand new card vs. a refurb?

they will give you a refurb if this is your first RMA, if they have a refurb in stock. If you RMA it again the chances of you getting a refurb is lower.

Well, after resetting my motherboard BIOS to stock and taking off my CPU overclock, the problem actually stopped, which makes me think this was PSU related? I am assuming that since the 580 draws much more power than the 460, it for some reason could not handle the two.

However, considering 650w is way more than enough for my sig rig, and I have a Seasonic, I find this hard to believe :-/

you have both cards running off a 650w? 650 would be enough to run one 580.

I phrased that strangely. I meant the PSU could not run my CPU overclock and the 580 at the same time.

Well during COD4 GPU usage is like 50% or less and my temp never exceeds 60, lol.

My Lightning gets plenty of air:
