Ps3 beeps 3 times and shuts down!!!

Thread Starter
I was playing Rage and all of a sudden it turns off while beeping 3 times and then the red light just constantly flashes.

My remote won't start it up again. But if I manually hold the power button down it will restart. Then says it wasn't properly turned off. Within a minute or so it does the same thing.

What is the cause of this? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Funny thing is it only does it while trying to play Rage. I am watching videos on it and no problem. I disconnected it and used air to clear dust out.

Still does it after a minute or two of Rage.

Maybe Rage takes way to much out of that particular Ps3 or its just Overheating and shutting itself off for protection
apply some new Tim to the Gpu and CPu

I had that same problem with my phat ps3 too. It'd struggle with some demanding games then run fine on games that are even MORE demanding.

Maybe try considering sticking some fans onto your PS3.

Your PS3 has the YLOD (Yellow Light of Death). If you look carefully, you'll see a yellow light appear before the red flashing begins. Your PS3 is now a paperweight, but can most likely be fixed if you're willing to try and are decent with electronics (i'd say success rate is at least 80% if done properly).

What happened is that either your cpu or gpu has lost its solder connection to the motherboard from repeated heating up/cooling down cycles. This is a very common problem with the earlier fat PS3s. What you need to do is reflow the solder around both the cpu and gpu by using a heat gun. If you go on Youtube and search PS3 YLOD, you'll find an excellent three part step by step guide (disassembly, heating, reassembly). If you do it correctly, chances are your PS3 will be back up and running in two hours thumb.gif

This, though I took mine to a bloke who repairs YLOD'ed PS3's and he said success rate is around 50%.
