First GPU Overclock - A little more juice before an upgrade

Hi all,

This is my first time trying to overclock my GPU beyond what CCC makes readily available. My rig is comprised of an Intel E8400 that I recently bought a new cooler for and overclocked to 3.8GHz and an ATI XFX Radeon HD 4870 512mb. Overclocking my CPU has got me hungry for a framerate increase in games like the Witcher 2 so when I heard that the 4870 is a notoriously good overclocker I figured I would give it a shot. Right now I am at 790MHz core clocks and 1005MHz memory...I think my memory needs to be set back a bit since I occasionally get a bit of artifacting in certain game menus (only the menus, never in-game, oddly enough) but I've read online that with decent air cooling I can push my core clocks to 815-825MHz. CCC, however, only allows me to go to 790MHz and tools like Rivatuner and MSI Overdrive only give me the option to go to 300MHz core clocks and something like 600MHz for memory. I feel like I must be doing something wrong but I have no idea what it could be. Could you guys help a fella out?

Also, I think I'm going to be picking up a new GPU come Black Friday as my GPU is now the component that bottlenecks my gaming performance and I don't want to spend too much more than 200USD so I'm looking at a 6870, 5870 or 6950 if I can find a good deal. Could you all recommend me a good card for the price, taking into consideration that I will likely overclock the new card so performance after overclocking is what I'm really concerned with.

Thanks!

Sapphire trixx will let you go insanely high on all the clocks but be careful it will let you go far beyond what the card is actually capable of. It let me set the core on my 5770 up to 1.2GHz and memory clock to 1600MHz, so use with caution.

Thanks very much. Any advice as far as cards are concerned? Also, what should I do to make my RAM as efficient as possible with my recent CPU overclock?
