NewBie Overclock -i7 920 d0-

post #1 of 15
Thread Starter
My system specs in sig*

Installed a Hyper 212+ last week and now eager to Overclock my i7 from stock [2.6Ghz] to some 3.4 or near [But stable and no bad load to cpu].

I tried the Easy OC Switch of "MSI x58 Pro-E Mobo" but on next restart I got a problem of Overclock Failed.

I've been through many tutorials, long lasting threads, but its lack of knowledge in OC, that I'm not getting some facts.

So I thought of starting with low OC and so on.
Please guys have a look and guide me :

Reseat and get new temps. Idle @ 2.6GHz and already in the 40s is a bad sign.

I was running 3.0Ghz from 3 days on 1.256 Vcore [Max on load] and stable was 0.96.

[According to Real Temp v3.60]
Stable load temp as : 44 C
Prime95 stress test it was : 71 C

BCLK was : 150 x 20

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~
Just now I started overclocking again [Yes! again after so many fail ]
I left every setting to be as usual and no changes because I felt its fine while using 3.0Ghz for 3 days.
no "Overclock Failed", "No Instant shutdown" and many other signs I'd noticed after a bad overclock.
So I now changed BCLK & multiplier as : 166 x 20
Leaving the Vcore as untouched because as said by a friend that 1.256 was high for 3.0Ghz,
I though it will be fine for 3.3Ghz.
Now,
CPU-Z :
Real Temp On Stable !!
Prime95 Test
1. [In red box]
The temp when my cabinet was kept @ its place and sadly no proper air space for my HAF 912 devil under-table.
2. [In Green Box]
Temp when I kept it on table to get proper open space.
Hmm.... Could it be your RAM holding you back? This is definitely weird.
I've got my 920 at a healthy 3.4 Ghz right now at 1.04V and it's perfectly stable. Not sure why you need 1.25 to get to 3.0 I'm also running a P6TD so it might also be the mobo but the MSI X58 seems like a pretty good mobo and you should be able to get decent overclocks with it, definitely not 3.0 while pushing 1.25V through the system though.
I was actually wondering if I could get my i7 920 D0 to 3.0 on stock voltage and just changing the Base Clock and multiplier? Just want to have it give me a bit of a boost when running BIONC. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Here Partner, i have a video up on YouTube. In the video description i go over some of the things you need to turn off and their definition. Also you should be able to hit 3.7GHz at or around 1.25v.
