Cant get 5.1 surround on onboard card

Thread Starter
so i'm using the onboard sound on an x58 motherboard. going digital (optical) out to my astro mix amp which processes dolby 5.1 surround using dolby headphone.

my sound settings in control panel cant be set on 5.1 surround when i try to change the default format. can i get 5.1 out of an onboard optical connection, I'd assume I'd be able to.

I have some good info for you here.

You can only get true 5.1 from a digital connection with something that is encoded for 5.1 eg dvd's blurays, ac3.

if you want 5.1 in games you will need to use the analogue connections or get a sound card with " Dolby digital live " like the card i have which gives me true 5.1 in games over digital connection .

Lol you have the option for dolby digital live in your control panel, when this is selected you use your analogue speakers as default and not the digital connection.
DDl converts the sounds from your speakers and then passes it along the digital line.
So to use dolby digital live yiou have to have ur control panel like the pic i have included, on the fly, you will never get ddl working if you have the digital connection enabled as default playback device as iot does'nt work like that , ddl and optical work in silent, it can't work if you do'nt have your sound cards analogue speakers as default playback device, forget about optical, put the cable in the hole and set control panel up to output through analogue speakers this will then be automaticly converted into 5.1 and then will pass through your opticale cable along to your 5.1 reciever.
you need to confirm that your onboard sound really does have dolby digital ive encoding and this will be seen through the soundcards external driver/control panel, just use windows sound panel to set default speakers as your soundcards analogue only and thenn goto soundcards control panel and set up ddl, if you have issues post some pics up .

if all this is going to a pair of headphones then you will still need an external decoder to output the 5.1 to your 5.1 headphones, the headphones do'nt have a decoder in them, it just accepts the signals that your stereo/home cinema system sends them.

you can't just put the headphones into the pc as you need a external decoder in between pc and headphones.
