Assumably this, http://www.ebuyer.com/267907-xfx-hd-...e-hd-695x-cnfc, will do the task and be flashable to the 6970 reference BIOS. If doubtful please explain?

At a later stage I could then buy a second, or even third 6950 and do the same for them (flash them to function as a 6970). Considering I'm on a single projector screen with a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 I think that's more than adequate performance for quite a while , or am I being overly optimistic?
If you buy 6950 expecting to unlock the shaders to a 6970, then no. There is no way to guarantee even one with 2 BIOS switch. If you buy a 6950 and take it as a bonus if unlockable, yes go ahead, otherwise buy a true 6970.

I have seen many Sapphire Toxic has a good chance to unlock, but not all of them. If you browse this section, you will read many success stories about Sapphire Toxic 6950.

A single 6950 2GB if overclocked to match 6970 or higher will have equal performance at 1920x1080. You will not loose anything but get the 6970 performance with less cost.

I'd personally hold out till the new ATI series releases Q1 of next year (only a couple of months wait)

I know the waiting game sucks, but I wouldn't 'upgrade' when they are about EOL -- couple months later it's outdated by a large margin whereas if you upgraded at the release of a new series, it'd take atleast a year to be "outdated"

That is said for the 6970 as well. You can overclock it and basically get it nearly as fast as a GTX 580 for much less. That should not be relevent.

And... a 4870X2 does not equal a 570 more like ATI 6870... 4870x2 = 2x 4870's = roughly ATI 5870 which = a slightly faster 6870 with mature drivers.

I see your point, but surely the price tag will be a bit higher on the new series than it is for the current series as the new series will have been just released? That could make a dent in my affordability scale if that is likely to happen.

And in regards to other replies regarding the unlockable state, I'll bear in mind that it is a bonus if I am able to even do that, rather than it being a fairly certain fact. I assume reference designs are best to stick to for it being more likely to be possible though?

You have a corsair 850 that should be enough for sli 580's if im not mistaken.. correct me if im wrong

And personally id recommend the 580 its a great card and it overclocks well

I may be interested in buying your old x2 if the price is right, if you ever decide to sell it. I have a single EAH4870 that would be complimented very nicely with your x2

On the other hand, it would probably require a nuclear power plant to run those cards in tri-fire I wonder if my sig rig PSU would handle it?

Well, I think I've come to a decision unless someone manages to make a good point as to why it would be unwise. Decision is based on performance, power consumption, price, value for money, and such.

I will buy two 6950's and accept they are 6950's, but there's always the off chance I could get them flashed to 6970, anyway... I'll crossfire those, and consider at a later date buying a third one when I can afford it.

Also where would be the best place to ask about a sort of price guide/valuation of my current graphics card so I know what it might be worth and what I may be able to sell it for?
