Laptop not booting.

Thread Starter
I'm not a complete computer 'noob' so it should be easier for people to try and help me through my issue, but because of my specific problem I can't pin point the problem myself.
I have a Dell Vostro 1520, it hasn't had any major problems that I haven't been able to fix before now but for some reason it is completely not booting. For months it has been giving me the 'consider replacing battery' crap, so I am hoping it is just my battery.

Before the problem occurred I closed the lid having left the laptop as usual, which should have sent it into stand by. It wasn't till hours later in which I tried to use it again, screen was off so I just assumed it was off.

Pressed the power up button and nothing! No HDD powers up, the fans doesn't spin, nothing. The power lights do come on for a few seconds and then turn off, with still nothing else happening. Just playing around with the laptop now and listening carefully, with the battery in I can hear a quiet high pitched humming. I think it is coming from the CPU, which is quite worrying. I hope somebody can help me here, because I don't wanna buy a new battery to find out that wasn't the problem in the first place.

Thanks in advance, Michael

Im guessing you plugged it in and then tried to start it up?....a bad battery should not stop your laptop from booting (after all you can boot with out a battery in a laptop)

I've had the same symptoms with about half a dozen laptops with family and friends, (as well as one myself) and its been the mother board, (most common with hp/compaq) apparently there is a spot you sodder to fix it on specific hp/compaq models but my soddering skill is not so good

Sorry for the news...hope this is not the case...but Im pretty sure...

You could try replacing the ram.but other than that im out of ideas...(but im no laptop guru)

Yeah I did try it that way, and nothing. I was sure before that my laptop didn't work via just the charger, but I've asked someone with the same laptop a couple of minutes ago and it does.

Ahh, this is terrible news for me. Having it just been my birthday on the 10th and got a lot of other things instead of being able to pay for fixing this issue. I'm not sure what I would even have to solder to fix my issue. But if this was possible given my good or bad soldering skills or not a shot at trying to fix it is better than a completely dead laptop.

I have two sticks of 2GB ram, so mixing them and trying each other gave no positive results either.

Anyway, by the sounds of it my motherboard is definitely gone. In this case would anybody recommend anything else I could do? Laptop is out of warranty so Dell support are going to be no help. My only choice other than to scrap the thing is to try and get spares and repairs and hack the motherboard out of the old one? ;(

Thanks again!
