Current System can't handle 3TB drives HELP!!

See my tag line for "this" system. Decided to turn this computer into a Windows Home Server / streaming server / file share. In my opinion it's still a very powerful machine that doesn't deam replacing. My new system is hella fast (980x overclocked), so am retooling this one. So I bought 5 3TB Seagate SATA drives, moved all my files off, and replaced them with the new ones. Boot up and WHAT? Intel Matrix Storage in the BIOS bootup sees them as 647GB hard drives. Guess this is a known issue. For lack of a hacked bios to fix this, does anyone have any idea of a raid card that could not only work with my 5 new drives, but also work with my Gigabyte motherboard? I have read oddly enough that for some reason a lot of raid cards need a "server" motherboard to work. Not sure what a "server" motherboard gives you, however obviously there aren't a lot of replacement options out there that can use a Q6600 processor and have something newer than my IHC9R raid chipset and a newer bios on it. Thoughts on options?

Thanks.

I'd just get a dedicated RAID card from eBay. That's what I did for my PowerMac G4 with its cruddy Key Largo IDE controller and it worked perfectly.

Couldn't you just partition the drives up into 647GB partitions until all 3TB is used up? Would have to dump all files off the drives, put them in new system, partition them up into 5 smaller partitions that your motherboard could read and put all the files back and back into old system. Would be the cheapest way to do it, but not the best way by any means. Just something to consider if you don't want to spend any money on it. May be a better way for free as well, just the first thing that came to mind.

ICH9R should work fine with those drives. RAID them and use GPT, not MBR. MBR is limited to 2TB. Read here for quick info.

I'd recommend RAID 5, and a separate drive for OS. I currently do this with my home server and 5 1.5TB drives with a single 80 for OS.

EDIT: Scratch that, I didn't know ICH9R has probs w/ 3TB drives specifically. The problem will be finding a card with enough ports. I'm using an old server card that I knew was Win 7 x64 compatible.

Your best bet is going to be something like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816132034

Either that, or do some reasearch and buy a used server card off ebay. I'm using a used server card, but I have professional networking buddy to tell me which ones to use.

No, when the raid configuration comes up, it shows each of the 5 drives and says they are 647GB drives each. So it doesn't even see them as 3TB drives in the first place.

Potential. The price scares me. Pretty cheap for an enclosure and the raid card. Would need one that can handle more drives but will look further on this path.

Thanks.

Out of curiosity, I need speed most of all for these drives. Would having the drives in the computer connected to some kind of RAID controller if I won't have any issues with them working in a desktop motherboard, an eSATA external enclosure, or a USB 3.0 external enclosure be best? Curious how much faster, if it is, a direct raid card would be over an external connection.

2thAche suggestion comes with some form of raid internal card which is odd as it's an external raid enclosure with an internal raid card? Plus has some kind of eSata card? Anyway, people say the card that comes with it is horrible, so made me start thinking of which methods would perform the best as I could have people backing up computers, streaming movies, and reading/writing files to these drives. Want to minimize the bottlenecks.

Thanks.
