5870 Eyefinity 6 & 500w PSU?

Thread Starter
I have a quick question.

I recently picked up a used Sapphire 5870 Eyefinity 6 for a work PC. Here's the hardware I'll be using:

CPU: Xeon E3 1270 (basically an i7 2600 non-k, but 80w)
Mobo: ASUS P8B-M LGA
Ram: 4x2gb ddr3 1333 ECC
Video: 5870 Eyefinity 6
HDD: 500GB & 2TB 7200rpm
Optical: DVD burner
PSU: Antec Earthwatts 500w

This rig will be used for 2D off work. I know it's overkill, but I wanted options for more monitors and the card was really cheap.

Will the antec be powerful enough

Since the card will never be used for 3D, this PSU is more than enough and then some. wink.gif

AMD recommends a PSU that has a peak capacity of 600W for a system that has one of these cards in it, but the 500W Earthwatts has a peak capacity that is over 600W.

5870 Eyefinity6 draw approx 230w on default stock clock. Antec Earthwatts has 2 +12V rails each @22A = 264w. Do not share the +12v rail with other peripherals, use the other rail. The PSU is on the edge for 3D clocks and will be fine for desktop multi monitor real-estate but no gaming.

But multiple rails aren't added together to find the total +12V capacity.

The total +12V capacity of the 500W Earthwatts Green (EA-500D) is 444W, which is 37A.

The total +12V capacity for the original Earthwatts is 408W which is 34A.

Multiple rails will have OCP at each rails. If loaded than rated will trip the OCP.

Though with multiple rails, the +12V will also shared by motherboard ATX24 Pins and for CPU.

So if OP can strictly use the card at 2D clocks and not to peg the core/memory to 3D, the PSU should be fine.

The OCP looks like it's set to 25A, based on Antec's website.

Either way, he will only be doing 2D. The only reason he got this card is to put together a multi-monitor setup (and he got a good deal on the card). It's for a system at his workplace.

Besides, the total +12V capacity is more than enough here. AMD recommends a PSU that has a peak capacity of 600W, and I'm pretty sure both 500W Earthwatt units have a peak that exceeds 600W.

@ OP,

The PSU doesn't have 8-Pins PCIe power connector, you will need this 6-to-8 pins adapter if one is not included in 5870 Eyefinity6.

Thanks guys. I got the card for about the cost of a new, off-sale GTX 460. I think that's a good deal. biggrin.gif

The card came with a 2 molex to 8 pin adapter. That should be fine?

The PC is entirely overkill, it's just for office work. I had the hardware laying around. The CPU shouldn't stressed.

If there's any question, I can just buy another PSU. I just wanted to be safe. It's not worth killing hardware to be on the cheap.

Edit:
I might just buy a Power PC&C 750w off of someone for cheap. That's probably the best option.

Get a proper PSU, a 750w or 850w with at least 2 8-pins PCIe power connector. Corsair or Seasonic Modular of your choice all be fine.
