Laptop not booting continued

Thread Starter
Thanks to my previous thread, I worked out that it is a motherboard fault. So obviously I'm going to want to try and get this problem fixed. I recently just spoke to some tech guy whose company fix and replace motherboards and laptop graphics. But because they are going to want to try and make as much money as possible out of me, he's saying it sounds like a graphics problem. However, I was led to believe if it was a graphics fault then the laptop would at least start. But with no graphical interface.

So I am wondering if this is correct, or if it is just a fault with the motherboard.

Thanks in advance, Michael.

If it's an older HP with nVidia 6xxx or 7xxx "Go" graphics I can confirm that it's a GPU problem. I had that exact problem and it was partly due to dust in the lappy and partly a crappy layout meaning that the GPU would burn out due to excessive heat "pooling up" in certain dead spots.

This is what you do, get a quote (in writing) of a maximum price he will do the work for and tell him that any extra time he spends on your system is his responsibility (ie. if labour is 15 quid/hr plus parts and he quoted you 100 quid at most and spent 15 hours on your system all you'd pay is 100). I haven't done this with computers since I've always worked on my own stuff but it usually works with construction projects but you really have to know what you're doing in that case.

That was my previous thread about my issue. It definitely is a motherboard problem.

I took the Laptop apart myself and cleaned and completely rebuilt it from start to finish and I have given it some form of life. When I say some form I mean, it is terribly slow to start up, is gives POST beeps for keyboard strokes from time to time. And sometimes when it doesn't come on it powers up but the Numlock light flashes while the Capslock and Shiftlock stay solid.

Atleast now I know it isn't a graphics processor issue which they were trying to tell me it was before, so If I can just get the motherboard replaced it should be okay.. I hope..

Oh another thing is when I did take it apart there was some white residue where I had spilt contact lense solution into my laptop the night before it broke. So I could pretty much say 70% that's to blame. I tried cleaning it as best I could with hard surface solution and a toothbrush, so maybe that has stopped a short which previously stopped my laptop from even trying to start.

If anyone has any addition advice that could help, it would be much appreciated.

Kind regards.

If I remember correctly I think CPU's are soldered on to the mobo of laptops making it difficult to just replace the motherboard, you have to get a new cpu too...unless their is some attachment to the casing of the laptop you might be better off buying a new laptop...or looking for a used one in the FS section. I just picked up a decent lappy here for just over $300 (now its not gonna run BF3) but it sure works better than nothing.

No, my motherboard is a socket and the processor is just like any other desktop one. It's can be unlocked and taken out of the motherboard.
