Why are HDD more likely to fail in Raid?

I have two HDDs set up in Raid0 and lately my rig has been acting up. Ill reboot and itll take some time for my computer to find my Raid array, and this morning my computer had reset in the middle of the night and it said it couldnt find my OS. I reboot and everything was fine.

Is there a reason why certain people say that HDDs can fail quicker if running in Raid0? Should i be running a Raid 1 setup instead?

They are not more likey to fail(As single drives), you are just doubleing the chance of failure(of the array). I dont know how to expain it in words.

Is there a reason why certain people say that HDDs can fail quicker if running in Raid0? Should i be running a Raid 1 setup instead?

RAID 0 - double chance of failure, increase performance.

RAID 1 - half chance of failure as both drives have the same data.

It's not that the individual HDD's fail quicker - it's if either one fails (and the other is still good) the raid0 fails - so its double the chance of a 2 disk raid0 failing compared to a single drive.

It sounds like you *may* have a drive failing - it's hard to tell in raid0 though, you'll need to come out of raid and test them individually to know.

Bummer. Yes i understand the concept Raid0 = data being divided between two HDDs vs Raid1= data being written equally on both hdds.

Huh well this sucks if one hdd is failing

Don't worry about hard disk fails for the desktop on RAID-0, mechanical drives are so cheap it doesn't matter anyway. It's not like your going to have mission critical data stored on them anyway.

Drive failures are pretty rare anyway, i've had lots of raid arrays and nothing ever kicked the bucket on me.

EDIT: Also note that an unstable overclock can wreck havoc with a RAID array, and will display things like you mention. unable to find the array or takes longer than necessary to find it upon bootup.

Thank you for your replies. Umm well i just bought 2 Raptor drives... for about 120$ per drive soo.... cheap not really if i have to continually buy new ones I dont overclock so im not worried about that, thank you for sharing!

Video ive seen before and yes he explains it very well.
