Dedicated PhysX Fail: I need some help :/ (570/8800gt)

Thread Starter
So my brother's computer just died, and instead of letting me put a new one together for him, he just gave it to me and bought a lappy. All the parts are throwaways, save my old 8800gt I gave him years back. I really want to turn it into dedicated physx (for teh epeens) but I cannot get it to work on my sig rig.

I have the latest beta drivers from nvidia, but they are not recognizing my 8800gt as a potential physx card (just my 570 or cpu). I put the 8800 in the main slot, to ensure that it works, which it does. So I tried uninstalling all nvidia drivers, then re installing with the hardware plugged into their proper spots. Still no luck. So now I'm wondering, what am I doing wrong?

Any help is appreciated, thanks guys!

I dont know alot about Physx, but it seems to me that if this video is corect, that would just hold back your FPS.

While that video is interesting, it is also missing a "middle card" for a test base. The 8600gts he is using only has 32 processing cores, vs. an 8800gt's 112 processing cores, vs. the 550ti's 192 processing cores. His test is lacking a card like my 8800gt as sort of that "threshhold" he may have been looking for. Regardless, this will definitely give me something to look out for if I do get this to work though. Thank you for the video.

First off, 8800GT will certainly help as a Physx card for a GTX570.
See these 2 threads for some numbers which you can use as reference for benchmarking after you have successfully installed it.

Regarding your current problem when you put the 8800GT into the 2nd PCIEx16 slot (ie PCIE4, the middle blue slot – see red arrow in pic below), does the Device Manager see the card correctly?

Make sure you have plugged in a 4-pin Molex into the motherboard for using dual graphics card. See red circle in pic.

Try these as well:-
a. Disable USB 3.0 if you do no need them. Even if you do, try this as a temporary measure for diagnostic purpose
b. Disable Lucid Virtu

Alright, tackling your questions in order.

Yes, 8800 in the second slot

Yes, device manager recognizes it, and even tries to install drivers for it. That is why I tried a fresh drivers update with both plugged in from the start.

Yes, 4-pin molex is plugged in

USB 3.0 and Lucid Virtu are already off, haven't gotten around to working on them yet (I know, lame and shame).

Thank you for this step by step help. Should I maybe try moving it to the third slot? Or perhaps I should wait for your next batch of steps before I get ahead of myself, haha.

Serious question, why do people still care about Physx?

They care when there is a game out which they like, that is Physx enabled.

No harm to try putting the 8800GT in the third slot but I suspect this might not be the reason.

I suspect the chief reason is that the 8800GT is not yet properly installed.
Perhaps try this diagnostic procedure:-
a. Uninstall all Nvidia drivers (including Physx)
b. Remove the GTX570
c. With the 8800GT alone in the middle slot and monitor connected to it, install the 280.26 WHQL driver. If successful, proceed below.
d. Now re-insert the GTX570 into the first slot and reconnect the monitor to it. Boot up.
e. Reinstall the 280.26 WHQL driver again, using the clean installation option.

By the way,
1. Does the Device Manager currently list the 8800GT card as 'NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT' without a yellow exclamation mark?

2. When you installed a driver for the 8800GT, did the process went through smoothly but you just cannot see the 8800GT listed as an option for Physx after the installation?
Besides this anomaly, is the 8800GT currently properly recognized within the NVCP or just listed as 'Standard VGA Graphics Adapter'?

I know that with my motherboard, I have to re-install drivers if I want to use the second slot. What I mean is that if I put my 560ti in the second slot, I have to install drivers there. Then I can move it between either slot and it work.
