That would not make sense...if people are buying less HDD (which is not the case), then the prices would go down. Basic rules of economics, the higher the demand, the higher the price.

The prices went up because everyone is anticipating the WD flood to affect prices and buying up drives.

Yeah, I had 2 WD hard drives in my cart on newegg, cart was $224.

Logged in to the site yesterday and the cart was $354.


I guess I'm not going to Raid0 any time soon.

Can someone explain to me why the flooding in Thailand wouldn't be the main reason? That country produces a quarter of the world's output of hard drives.

It probably is the main reason. I don't think the rare metal shortage has had enough time to hit the retail prices just yet.
