(Yes i reformatted)
HDMI seems to be smoother but i can't get it to work correctly.
I tried with different monitors, different cables and with my 580's and with the 6970's.
Sounds like Microstutter...

Try it without SLI turn on...

Also try setting prerendered Frames to 0..

SLI off = Similar type of stuttering eg, turning a courner of before something is going to happen.
Pre-Render 0 = Worse gameplay with SLI on.
SLI on = Little more stuttering.

Try turning HT off...

i have heard that it sometime makes it worse...

but it sounds like some type of lag in the system...

i would say along the line of the CPU, RAM, HDD, or Motherboard..

It might be your raid might have a bit of lag in it..

Have you benched it?

I'vetried raid 0 and AHCI. My i7 is at 4.7Ghz which is fine. The RAM is large capacity and good speed. Nothing wrong with the motherboard. What's the chances of it being HT?

I ran all my games on an SSD before i got the 580's and i never got these stutters so it could be a limitation on the hard drive. What's the best budget ssd for me that's very good for games?

I literally had the same problem today running Rage. I would get a line about 2" down on the screen from refreshing with DVI, HDMI cable took it away.

I noticed that in game, the VSYNC setting changed from "Enable/Disable" with the DVI to "SMART" with the HDMI. Something about the digital hdmi connection, works much better. I'll never go back!

Could be pagefile stutter. You have lots of RAM so try disabling it.

System Properties > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced > Change > Uncheck the box, and set to No paging file > Set > OK
Note: some programs will not work correctly without it.
