New Crossfire 5770 setup

Thread Starter
Hey all!

I recently purchased two MSI Hawk R5770's from Newegg for $130 total (I'm pretty stoked). Right now I'm running a single Nvidia GTX 460, which my brother is buying from me.

This is my first dual card setup, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me? Or anything I ought to be careful of. I have enough space between my two card slots and I have a PCI slot fan between them, so heat ought not be a problem.

Am I going to be pleased with this setup? Right now I'm primarily playing Metro 2033, and will be getting Skyrim when it comes out.

Good cards, but it is too bad you didn't add a second gtx460 - then you'd have the muscle to turn PhysX on in Metro 2033, Mafia 2 (which was only ok, but pretty).

Dual gpu rigs - drivers, game release info( ie do they have cf or sli drivers at release) and air flow. Other than that you are good to go.

PhysX always intrigued me, but ultimately seemed a little silly. I understand that it adds quite a bit to the game, but the things it adds don't really impress me a whole lot. Certainly not enough to put another video card in my rig just for it.

Also, I wouldn't have had the money for it. My brother is buying my 460 for what I paid for the two 5770's together. That's a straight-up trade. Adding a 460 would have cost me a fair bit out of pocket.

Also, I think they both come with a Crossfire bridge, but I ordered one from Amazon for 8 bucks shipped, just in case.

I think you should picked up another GTX 460. Your not going to see much improvement with 5770 CF and AMD drivers are terrible. Sell tho's 5770's and get a GTX 460 and SLI those. Trust me, you will have MUCH more fun with 2 GTX 460's

Neither of you are understanding the money, lol. I sell my 460 for $130. I buy two 5770s for $130. End of transaction. I can't get another 460, I can't afford it. It would be either sticking with the single 460 or getting the 5770's.

As for drivers, I've found Nvidia drivers to be garbage and they have caused me no end of trouble. So I can't imagine AMD's being much worse.

You guys, he didn't get the 5770s yet. He's selling his GTX 460 for $130, then using that money to purchase 2 5770s.

AMD's drivers are fantastic. I have never had a problem with them. Enjoy the 5770s

Or maybe I'm not understanding it lol. You bought 2 5770s and you're making that money back by selling your 460?

You posted the "straight up trade" just when I was done my post so I didn't see it until my post came up. In that case, it's a good trade. You will be happy.

AMD is worse sorry, plus Metro 2033 is a Nvidia geared game. but having said that what settings are you using on your Metro 2033 game. That game is just too gpu intensive, i hope you won't be disappointed that even CF 5770s won't get you much more fire power than a GTX 460. maybe you can play one setting higher? good luck !

For reference, i had CF 6870s and then bought one GTX 580. The 6870s in metro didn't really do as well as one GTX 580. On paper the 6870s benchmark better than one GTX 580 (same comparison as your CF 5770 vs. GTX 460), but then I think maybe due to CF profiles weren't as great for that game.

Why did you trade? 5770crossfire ~5850/5870. Gtx 460~5850. Plus you will need to deal with heat, airflow, etc.
