Upgrading 5870 -> ???

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
I have a chance to sell the 5870 in my LAN rig and it would be nice to have a card that does better tessellation for newer games (future proof). My question is which would be better a 560 ti or a 6950 1gb? I was looking at benchmarks but they are all with really old AMD drivers and I know they have made so much head room in the past year performance wise, so I just don't know what to do.

I wouldn't mind the same power as the 5870 and just better at dx11. Please take note I will not be spending a penny on this "upgrade" so there is no money involved. I just want my lan rig to be more future proof. Also keep in mind the monitor for the lan rig is 1440x900 so I don't see 2GB being useful.

I am looking at either

i think both would be a downgrade actually...

6870/560Ti are about as powerful or less then a 5870

Definitely go for a 2GB 6950/6970. You'll get about the same performance in dx9/dx10 titles and way better performance in dx11/tesselated titles. You want 2GB for 1080p... BF3 used 1500MB at max

I upgraded from Crossfire 5870s to a single 6950 2GB. It has been a fantastic upgrade and was able to handle anything i threw at it, even at crazy resolutions of 6080x1200.

at that resolution there is no reason to upgrade your GPU. a GtX460 would have been fine tbh.

I have a chance to replace my 5870 with one of those 2 cards for FREE and was just wondering which one is better. This makes the lan rig I have more future proof as I am sure people are going to be playing BF3 on it and that needs a card that can do tessellation better than a 5xxx series card.

If you're trading for only one of the two cards mentioned in the OP, go for the 6950.
