HD 5850 Temperatures really high all of a sudden, can't O/C!!!

Hi everybody!

I've got an HD 5850 with a Scythe Musashi VGA Cooler. I've ben using this setup for a while and I've been getting great temperatures and really low noise from my case up until recently, it seems like all of a sudden my temps have rocketed up by 20°!

picture.php?albumid=1832&pictureid=28298

I couldn't get the core clock in the pic but it's at 725 MHz, I want to overclock this card but I'm afraid I'm already reaching unsafe temperatures...

I've reseated the heat sink 3 times now and the temps have improved by only a few degrees! What gives?!?confused.gif Any feedback is appreciated.

At this point, just make sure the fans of the Musashi are working as it should.

If the heatsink clean and free from dust and making good contact with GPU core/Vreg, the only thing could think of is the card is going bad.

Try Catalyst 11.9 if anything related to it, very unlikely but give it a try.

Best bet is to remove the card, remcleans, clean reaply tim and reassemble. If it still has high temps card is bad.

It's really weird, when I took the card out to reseat the cooler, I cleaned out all the dust, applied some new Noctua TIM, even lapped the little Copper adaptor plate that comes with the Cooler, still no improvement...

Oh well, I've read somewhere that someone put their GPU in the oven and started to work just fine after, maybe I'll throw it in on the next batch of cookies tongue.gif

good news! I think I've somewhat fixed the problem, thanks to Ken1649!

I reseated the Voltage Regulator Heatsinks and fixed them with some Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive. I noticed that there was double sided sticky tape that came with the Scythe GPU Cooler heatsinks , I don't know how effective that was at conducting heat but this Arctic Silver stuff is working just fine at the moment.

What do you guys think, safe to overclock with these temps?

Looks good and stay below 80°C should be ok to OC a bit.

I noticed that once the Voltage Regulator temperatures lowered, the overall card got cooler as well, I think I'm going to invest in a ThermalRight VRM heatsink and stick a fan on it to lower the temps further so I can O/C this card. It'll only cost me $25 but I'm wondering if it's compatible with my PowerColor HD 5850, on the Thermal Right website it says the heatsink is compatible with reference designs and my card is pretty close, but not exact...

The top picture is a reference board and the bottom pic is of a PowerColor 5850.
