Computer shuts down @ random/won't poweron until unplugged

Thread Starter
Shuts down randomly with no bsod or error messages. Computer is overclocked but happens even at stock settings. When it is running (hours and hours ata time no prob) it runs excellent. I have ran prime for up to 45 minutes on blend and temps never over mid 40s. The thing is when it shuts down it will not turn back on until it is unplugged(or power supply switch on back flipped off then on) and then plugged back in. I have taken a multimeter to the ps cords plugged into the mobo and all voltages read within range while power is applied. All my specs are in sig. I really think its the power supply but don't wanna buy another just with a hunch. Please help cause I'm confused thanks ahead of time!

From what it sounds like your PSU has a faulty overload switch. most all modern PSU have an overload switch that shuts them off in the case of a short. This switch once triggered can not be rest until the PSU is either turned off or unplugged. Though some PSUs due to various circumstances can trigger this overload switch even when the load on it is within its normal operating limits. I had an old 450w dell PSU that would trigger the overload switch with any load greater than about 5 amps even though it was rated for 17 amps. This overload switch can also be triggered by sudden increases in current draw.

So do u suggest I rma this psu back to the egg and get another? Also there is one benchmark test that I have can't remember off the top of my head what it is that while running the computer instantly powers off in one particular test. Kinda goin too fast to tell which one and no messages when I power back on to tell me whats up. Thanks for the reply! Was not aware of this internal switch but makes TOTAL sense and really puts the pieces together in my limited power supply knowledge.

Not to hijack this thread, but I believe I have a situation similar to the OP, although my computer will restart instead of shutting down. I will then get BSODs if I try to boot up. Unplugging the PSU and replugging it back in solves it completely.

The computer is stress-test stable for many hours, and is only afflicted, however seldom, by this random event.

Dark mischief... man ur situation sounds more hectic than mine with the bsods and all. What are the error messages u r getting? Seems like not enough power is gettin thru until u hardreset it. But honestly I have no idea or else I wouldn't of made this thread to begin with haha. I use tapatalk on android, how do I get it to notify me when someone replies to my post?

Ok just a little update. I have done a stupid amount of testing and research just because I obsess about something if I do not know the answers, anyways... my psu says it is 54amps on +12volt rail, turns out there are "4" +12v Rails. Well the 54 amps is NOT on every rail but split between all 4. So thats technically 13 amps per rail. Well My Graphics card requires atleast 12 amps and thats cutting it mighty close. So when benchmarking or watching hd movies etc it stresses my power supply and it dips below the required voltage to power the system. Im rma'ing this misleading arse p.o.s. TOMORROW! Researched getting a splitter and somehow combining 2 of the rails into one to plug into radeon but its way too dangerous as each rail might not be the EXACT same amps at a given time and could probably really jack some ish up! Well Guess I learned my lesson and gonna stick to no more than 2 rails on the +12v (im not running quadfire so no need for ore than 2) thanks for your help guys!

Nope.

Nothing to do with your power supply's rail distribution. If that were the issue the whole system would shut off instantaneously when you hit the OCP trip point. Not cause BSODs.

Look elsewhere. Likely not even the PSU...

Ah, misread you.

You shouldn't be tripping your PSU's OCP, so I don't think it's the rail distribution that's the issue... though it could be.

I don't see how its not the rail distribution. The pc is powering down in an instant and the card requires 12_13 amps and these rails put out just that amount of amps. I should have read the reviews on newegg because over half have the same exact problem. Bout to rma it now. Thanks for alls insight

Good luck with the RMA, hopefully your problem will begone!

At first I thought my problem (which rarely does happen, but it does once in a while) was related to yours, but I don't think it has to do with rail distribution in my case.
