Asus Xonar STX Major issues.

Thread Starter
Hello,

On 10/21 purchased and installed the Asus Xonar STX and I have VERY mixed feelings about this card. Here are some of the issues I've been having:

1. I hear a constant buzzing and hissing sound out of the headphone output

2. The audio sounded very tinny.

3. I hear a popping sound after short audio clips. For example: when Skype plays the notification sound, I hear the sound and then a "pop" plays and then slowly fades away.

4. When using the line-in port for the mic I hear a similar hiss and buzz like in problem 1.

When I had these issues I did not have my Sony MDR-7506's yet and I thought I may have been having these issues due to using mediocre Apple earbuds.

Unfortunately that was not the case, when I received my Sony MDR-7506's on 10/22 I still had issues 1,3 and 4 but issue 2 went away. I decided to take the following troubleshooting steps in this order.

1. Re-seat card

2. Use different molex connector

3. Move card as far away from GPU and PSU as possible

4. Give the soundcard it's own modular lead from the PSU to ensure clean power.

Unfortunately most of these steps did not work except for step 3 which had a SLIGHT reduction in buzzing.

Here is an example of the buzzing and hissing I have been hearing:

Any suggestions are welcome smile.gif

how about updating sound card drivers? have you been using the front panel connections for the headphones? its generally recommended to plug directly into the sound card.

possible driver conflicts? did you remove and disable onboard drivers and audio?

I am plugging my headphones directly into the soundcard. I installed the latest driver off of Asus' website and uninstalled the onboard ones but I will try to uninstall and reinstall the drivers and disable the onboard in BIOS.

Thanks! +Rep

I had issues with my card but the issue (sound popping) with mine was an application running in the background that caused major issues to my DPC latency. I, however, did not have any issues regarding static on output (the only time I had it was when I left the microphone playback option in the control panel). The input has static on mine, but it's not noticeable and I don't need it for performance.

I was able to fix the mic issue by disabling microphone boost.

It sounds like the hissing I'm getting on the output sounds like it may be coming from a fan. Is that possible?

You could try to swap out fans in order to find the culprit. My STX so far didn't show any audible distortions with my gentle typhoon fans but YMMV.
Another thing to try would be the UniXonar driver that solves the nasty forced upmixing of stereo sources problem. Maybe it also helps with your other issues.
Tinny sound is not something I'd associate with the STX. My earbuds (Klipsch image X-10) were overwhelmed by the power and sounded outright boomy and veiled.
Do you maybe have flex bass enabled? I use it to route bass to my sub when using speakers but for headphone use it should be disabled.

Try and enable Hifi mode, it will turn off any EQ effects or 3d effects that may accidentally have been left on.

Short of that try muting all inputs, line in and microphone.

I have heard of a fan causing interference with sound once before, so you could disconnect the fan and see if it makes a difference.
