Overclock not working with MSI afterburner, but is working with Catalyst Control

I tried to check if there were any posts about this but I think I might be having a specific problem.

I tried overclocking my 6950 (its flashed to 6970) to (950/1450 with 1.2v) with Afterburner. I ran furmark and it quoted the clocks as being set @(950/1450 with 1.175v)

With this setting the display drivers crashed so I brought the card to stock again.

One thing that I did notice was that the after trying to overclock with afterburner, FPS in furmark was the same as stock (50-51).

Now, with my afterburner attempt failing, I tried to apply the +20% power option in Catalyst Control. When I did this, furmark registered the clocks @(950/1450 with 1.175v) and everything seemed stable but I also noticed that the FPS in furmark jumped up to around 63.

This made me think that afterburner wasn't working properly and made the system unstable.

I was planning on watercooling the card and seeing how far I could push it (950/1450 just aint enough! ) so is there any other overclocking software that you would recommend that can set clocks higher? Should I try download the beta version of afterburner? Is this a common problem with 6xxx series cards (flashed or stock)?

Any help would be great!

I would try the beta version of afterburner, that's about as good as it gets. There's nothing fullproof out there that I know of.

After you install Afterburner 2.2.0 Beta 8, disable ULPS.

To disable ULPS:

1. Go to regedit (start > search programs and files > "regedit").
2. In drop down menu: find file > type "enableulps".
3. For ALL instances (keep pressing F3) change the "1" value to a "0".
4. Reboot PC.
