Bad news for the Nürburgring Nordschleife enthousiasts

Thread Starter
As the title says, I have some bad news...

We wherr on our way to go see the qualification and champioships final race of the DTM race in Hockenheim (full weekend), untill we saw a big yellow sign say: 'Nürburgring Nordschleife'. Lol whut? YES, THE MOTHER****ING NÜRBURGRING NORDSLEIFE!!1! So we dropped the DTM qualification and headed to the track...

So yes, we went to the Nürenburgring Nordschlieife. While we where there, we obviously took our (rented!) car out on the track a few times, and 2010/2011 (not sure) Opel Astra 1.6, lol. And I gotta say, we had a blast! BUT(!)...

...it looks pretty much NOTHING like it in the game... Especially the height differences. The height differences in real life are SO much more and steeper... Rediculous. Really really ridiculous. That's 1. If you watch a good comparison video, in real life, it looks ALOT different. Especially from a side the track. I know the track, literally, by heart. Drove it over 100's of times in-game. I was actually having a hard time memorizing the real track... No so much the corners, but the steepness of many many many sections. That's 1.

2: Talking about corners, some are sharper, and some are less harp. That's 2.

3: Alot of corners are even more ridiculous. It's hard to explain, but I'll do my best. Ingame, after the carrousel with the contcrete blocks, the asphalt stays pretty much flat-ish, with a light-to-medium corner to the right, and at the top the track levels out (short straight) makes a medium left downwards into a hard-right corner, correct? Correct. In real life, and this is for real, the asphalt after the carrousel goes STRAIGHT up (approx. 15-20% and no corners), and halfway up, it turns into a light corner to the right WHILST going up, at the top (flats out), immediately after it flats out it makes medium-to-heavy corner to the left downwards (again 15-20%) into a medium cornder upwards to the right. ***? So much different. Like I said, very hard to explain. I want to go back as soon as possible, and I'll make many many pictures for comparison.

4: The enviroment... The enviroment is even worse. Many people recognize certain sections of a track by looking at the enviroment. Escpecially the Nürburgring Nordschleife because it's so long. Well, let me tell you... Stop looking. The track ingame is full of trees, to make it easier for the developers to develop the track. In real life, ALOT of trees, obviously, but not as much as the real track... In real life, there's a unpaved path ALL the way around the outside of the track. Ingame, pretty much only trees... And take the castle for example in the "middle" of the track ingame. In real life it's much much much closer to the long straight. Rediculous.

By actually driving the real track, I have come to realize how little effort is put into this (not sure about other tracks) track... But that's hard to realize since Kazourni Yamauchi is such a perectionist.

What do you guys know/think?

Edit: GT5 btw, lol.

Dude really?

In real life you have g-forces to contend with and the fear that if you go to fast you might end up be seriously hurt (or dead) and/or $25,000 in the hole.

In real life, you can feel the changes in elevation while in a video game, you obviously can not.

I am sure those 2 factors (g-forces and fear) shaped your perceptions a lot.

Every game cannot really duplicate the drops and climbs. Eau rouge isn't like in videogames, irl it's crazy. Driving Laguna Seca in real life will scare the **** out of you. For a videogame the GT5 one is already quite a good replica. I have driven some tracks irl incl. the Nordsleife and Zandvoort and drops and climbs (+g-forces) make it so much different from tv or videogames. You just cannot duplucate it.

Also one thing: the ring is under constant construction. They're always busy changing afphalt and whatnot. Some corners just change ovetime.

Really really. Good point. But I'm convinced, they can easily replicate the elevation changes... They can atleast overdue it slightly to make it look very steep.

Again, good point. But stil... They can easily make a drop look real. I'll drive the track again today ingame, see if it's really that steep and stuff.

The OP never mentioned anything about g-forces or fear, he was talking mostly about the layout of the track and how it's differed from the video game. Elevation changes can easily be replicated in video games. Sure you can't "feel" them, you can't "feel" anything in video games, but it can be visually replicated. Like being shot in FPS's for example. You can't feel it, so the developer throws blood on your screen ("your face") to let you know, "HEY YOU JUST GOT SHOT." Back to racing games, in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, there are some pretty big elevation changes through out the game, and I'm sure GT5 could have done the same thing.

Height changes cannot be simulated. Unless you can feel your stomach drop it's just not the same. Of course it's gonna be hugely different when you're in the setting. You see more, the scale is so much different. You're in a 10-15ft car that weighs 3,000+ pounds. In the game the car is 6 inches.

I don't see how this is bad news. I thought this was going to be a thread about it finally being shut down for good.

GT5....

That game has the worst track remakes for this generation, It will look better and feel better on most other games, Race 07 has a good replica of the track

so many elitists x_x

GT5 does not have the worse track remakes, it actually has great reproductions.
If you play GT5 and jump into iracing you'll do fine thats how close they are in application
I know that's fact because that happened to me when I jumped into PC racing sims.
I'll stick to Turismo / Forza because they look a lot better.
