Am I CPU limited? would OCing my NB/RAM improve my

Thread Starter
How can I know? I'm relatively new to PC building etc.

I plan on adding another 6970 to run in tri-fire with my 6990(I use eyefinity). I'd like to play BF3 will max settings in eyefinity.

for a tri-fire setup go with intel

that 965 already a big bottleneck for 6990

You are almost certainly CPU limited in some games.
Its pretty easy to tell. Run at game in windowed Mode at the settings you like (or if it has a demo mode). In the background have a gpu monitor and task manager up. If your GPU never hits 100%, or your CPU is pegged at 100%, your limiting the GPU.
You can get an idea of how much by what sort of load your GPU is running under. Im going to guess battlefield 3 maxed you are going to be looking at 60-70% gpu load.
Once you add the extra 6970.....im sad to say it being an amd man, but your going to need a 2500 with a hefty OC to match the horsepower of those cards.

I run 6990+6970 at 5760x1080 with a 955BE @4ghz. Have been looking into this also and reading up on BD, and doing what testing I can. There will most certainly be some bottlenecking as the CPU cant keep up, but it is dependent on the game and what types of scenes it is rendering. Particles are the big killer, and are heavily CPU dependent. In BC2 most of the time I am maxing out with vsync with all the highest settings, vsync off shows FPS are 80-120. When in heavy snow scenes, if i look at an angle to try cover all three monitors with snow particles, i see it drop down to 58fps a couple times.

So, in reality there is almost always some bottle necking likely going on, but it has been irrelevant since i am still getting fps i need. However BF3 is still unknown, so i will be waiting til i can test what FPS i generally get with the actual game before committing to any further upgrade paths. Thats my approach.

Note: I had the 6970 first, added the 6990 later. My suggestion to you would be test first with the actual game since you have the 6990 already.

Wrong, majority of games become gpu limited 1080p and greater. Eyefinity, you can damn well be sure that the gpus are limited.

That being said, all I see is asus 27 inch in his sig rig, need more info.

Pay attention bro, at higher resolutions + eyefinity it doesn't matter

Not at all. Phenom II is going to bottleneck at all resolutions if you have two or more high end cards. I have a crappy 1440x900 monitor and I was GPU limited in more than half my games when I had two GTX 460s. It was older games where I was CPU limited.
That being said, you are probably majorly CPU bottlenecked.

Eyefinity gets the bottleneck at GPU, but X/Trifire gets it at CPU. OC CPU and NB helps.
