5.1 speakers to use as 2.1 or 2.1 system? - Page 4

If he chooses to do so, that's fine and dandy. But don't cheap out on the receiver. smile.gif The Polk Monitor line and BIC Venturi line are both solid budget speaker setups. The Polk tends to be a little more "bright" sounding, whereas the BIC will tend to sound a little more natural. But either would be a great choice for good budget speakers.

The F1 subwoofer is a solid $200 subwoofer. Obviously more expensive ones will tend to do better, but at the price point of some of the more expensive ones, I'd rather build my own with a TC Sounds driver and a 500-1000w amplifier. smile.gif Oh wait, that's what I'm saving to do. doh.gif

for now that sub will have to do (I am on a tight budget). what other sub might you suggest so that I can add it to a list of stuff to look out for in terms of deals using slickdeals.net

I've never considered HSU as budget but if you can fit them in I'd definitely put those at the top of my list. That is a company that knows what it's doing.

You'll set the crossover points through the receiver, yes. Basically, anything 60Hz and below will go to the subwoofer. Anything 60Hz and higher will be filtered to your other 5 speakers. So all 5 of your other speakers will need to be able to do at least 60Hz as a minimum (for optimal results).

As far as going for crappy satellites, see above. For optimal results, they'll still need to go as low as 60Hz for optimal results.

The BIC Venturi line (towers, bookshelfs, and center) are what I'm personally saving for, along with a custom TC Sounds subwoofer. I've heard them before, and I absolutely loved the way they sounded compared to my old Polk Monitors.

The F1 subwoofer, I had that subwoofer a while back when it was first up on Parts Express. For a complete $200 powered subwoofer, I have yet to hear anything better for a basshead that likes lows. The SUB120 (I've also owned) came close, but just didn't have that super low end punch.

Come to think about it, I really need to quit going through equipment so often, and pick something and just stick with it. Especially since I always go for "budget" gear like this.

Oh, and as far as the speakers go....

You'll want to pick speakers that are all VERY close to the same (like the Venturi line, or the Polk Monitor line). Reason why, if you pick different fronts, a completely different center, and some cheap surrounds....they will NEVER match up sound wise. That's how mine is right now, and I'm kicking myself for doing it that way. Get stuff that matches, that's the best in your budget to start you off with. Buy the subwoofer later if you have to (just get towers instead of bookshelfs for the fronts).

It just sounds REALLY odd when something zooms through all your speakers (like in a movie), and the sound is completely different from one speaker to the next.

custom Woofer?! dang man nice. Yeah with the budget I have, if the BIC is the best for the price line I will get em except for the F12 sub for now till i settle some stuff. BTW how are these that someone else suggested:

Polk Monitors Series:
Monitor 40 - $120
CS2 - $150
Monitor 30 - $90

2x HB-1 Mk. 2 - $300
HC-1 Mk. 2 -$250
Monitor 30/40 - $90/120

I think the HSUs are out of production/selling. oh what is a monitor?
BTW I have repped you all for your tremendous help
post #38 of 75
The 609 will let you choose the frequency range each speaker receives. It will also set those ranges and volume correction during the initial setup with the included microphone.

The Polk Monitor setup is going to sound "bright" compared to the BIC Venturi. If you like a bright sounding speaker (not necessarily a bad thing), then those wouldn't be bad.

The other setup I wouldn't do, simply because the speakers won't match. See my above response as to why that's important.

The HSUs are still being sold. Monitor is just the name of the product line, or it can refer to a speaker mostly used in recording environments with a very flat response. In this case, it's the name of the product line.
