Cheap? Do you think it still works?

So my cousin gave me his old Pentium 4 rig to resurrect yesterday. I was just wondering wether the power supply would be good enough to still power the machine after nearly 5 years in storage. For some reason, it makes me feel funny just thinking what will happen when power is put through for the first time after so long in storage. It is an Omni 500W PSU. Is there anything I should be worried about with this power supply? Should I buy a replacement? And I was wondering If 500W would be good enough to power the rig with a 6770, 3 SATA hdds and a fan controller?

I think 500W should do, as long as you have enough connectors to power everything.

I still have a 190W PSU from the 90s that's still functional, 5 years is nothing in computer years heh.

hmm..never heard of "omni" i'm askeered, but.it's not a whole lot of power you'll need..

well, as for the power supply, I don't think there is a problem, but I would like to comment on the graphics card, that I don't think that a Pentium 4 is able of handling an AMD 6770 ... you wont even feel its nice performance with this CPU.

how much of RAM that rig has also ??

A few year back I booted up a 200 Mhz Pentium machine without any problems and it had bee in the attic for a long long time.

Considering how there is no onboard graphics or a discrete graphics card yet, could I still put power to it to see if its functional? It will give me a POST beep, wont it? And its a 6 channel fan controller, and I also plan on doing some overclocking on a Hyper Tx3, the Hyper 212+ doesn't look like it'll fit in my case, so would the hyper Tx3 be good?

Well, there isnt any memory in it either, but I can only put in 2 sticks of ddr2 because the motherboard has ddr and ddr2 in combo, but you can only use either ddr dor ddr2. I think the manual stated that it only supports 2GB full system memory, but is there any way I could put 4GB in there? And the only memory I find in stores closest to me is ddr2 800mhz. The memory rated for this board is ddr2 533mhz but it will do 600mhz with an overclock and a 800mhz fsb cpu. Does this mean I will have to overclock to run the 800mhz ram? or can it be downclocked to run properly?

To check up on potential RAM, use Crucial's website if you can determine the motherboard model or if you know the manufacturer + model number of the computer.

That said, you'll be fairly limited on a P4. I'm surprised there's even a PCI-E port for it, all the ones I've seen are either PCI or AGP

I am surprised too. The motherboard is the Gigabyte GA-8I915P Duo Rev 2.0. I still don't know what Pentium 4 model it is, cause of the lack of graphics. I also submitted in the Computer Case thread that I was having problems with the split front panel connectors.

1- as for expanding the memory, I am afraid there is no way to expand it further than the limited amount stated by the manufacturer, but you can use the "Windows ReadyBoost" by using a USB flash stick in either Windows Vista or Windows 7, and here let's say that you can "for instance" use a stick of 4 GB capacity, which will put a very good impact on the overall system performance ( this is from a personal experience on a 945GC motherboard I owned before with a P4 and ONLY 2GB DDR2 limit of memory)

2- regarding overclocking.. unfortunately, you maybe able to overclock the CPU, but the RAM wont be overclocked further the stated number in the manual AT ALL, so if it's only 533 FSB for RAM (like the motherboard I owned in the past) then overclocking wont let the RAM run anything higher than this.

I hope this helped some.
