Radeon 6970 Crossfire Question

Thread Starter
For my next rig i was thinking of using the radeon 6990 and crossfire it.

Will a 750 watt psu be able to power a radeon 6990?
I will be using a AMD FX 8150 at 4Ghz and 1.5v.
My card will be at 1.3v with 1Ghz core.

Good power supply?

A 750W should do, but it might push it with that FX. I would feel safer with an 850W.

Instead, I would get this.

Or this

And just keep your TX 650. No need to get a new 850W unit if you get one of those.

Since you overvolt and powertune +20%, 850W may be better to get. If you just play games, then 750W should be good.

From what I've seen of FX benchmarks you'll probably want an 850W as they tend to draw alot of power when OC'd. Seeing as your OCing your 6970s as well I definitely wouldn't go below 850W.

I have a tx750 running two 6970s and an overclocked 2500k. Only reason I'm upgrading to a 850 is because it's modular. 750 runs it fine. overclocked too

Nice but are your video card overclocked as well?

My concern wouldn't be the video cards but with the CPU... The last batch of AMD CPUs were notorious for drawing a ton of wattage, to the point of burning out their boards...

The 6970s will be able to handle it no problem. Just for the hell of it, since it has come up in a few threads in different forums, I just benched my 6950s overclocked and unlocked to 900/1375, in F1 2010 with everything on ultra, and at eyefinity resolution. I got no graphical lag, average FPS 66, minimum was 60, and I had my power meter in, and it didn't hit over 490 (it was mostly 475, but for one tenth of a second it jumped to 490w). I think you'll be fine with a 750w, assuming your CPU doesn't draw a ton of power (I don't know how much more power it would draw over a 2600k @ 4.3ghz).
