Has the 5970 outlived it's usefulness? - Page 3

Recently went back to air and got the FT02 to replace my ABS Black Pearl. Absolutely love it and helps keep the 570s cool since the 2 cards are about 1cm apart.

I'd keep an eye out on the FT/FS forums and Craigslist. Black Friday/Cyber Monday is just around the corner too. GL.

I'm still loving my 5970.
Even @ stock clocks it does great in every games.
BF3 beta was smooth and didn't hurt my 5970 that much.

The only downside, which doesn't make it futurproof, is the amount of VRAM...

I 'll keep it until the new 7xxx/6xx series come out.

Wait it out. Your AMD 5970 is holding up fine for you then hold off a few more months.

Next gen cards will be on a smaller shrink die 28nm fabrication. It will be about 15-25% more performance of current gen cards. The big hype however is that it will take 50% less power consumption to run.

They have been delayed as the 28nm chips have been slow to AMD and Nvidia vendors and slow to production. AMD is expected speculation about end of December and Nvidia mid-jan to early Feb approximately.

For your needs, it'd be like buying a 2011 car on December 31, 2011 when 2012 cars come out a day later.

Since your not gaming, and didn't mention how your dying to play Battlefield 3 next week in all it's glory, your best route would be to wait.

There are some gamers right now in this dilema to wait or not. They are sporting cards that will have trouble playing BF3 and are biting at the bit on what to do.

Your situational needs don't require you to pull the trigger too soon. You'll be glad you did. After next gen cards come out, you'll even have the option to buy current gen cards out now at even lower prices as prices will drop with the new releases.

Thread Starter
I just have to say, thanks for all the comments. It looks like many of you have been in my position, and have given it some thought. Usually I'm a thread killer when I post (I tend to post, then have no posts after me), or I start a thread and get a handful of replies. So thanks to each and everyone of you again... I mean it!

Respectfully,
ericeod
