RuneScape Requirements

Thread Starter
To start, I'm not much in to RuneScape these days, I have membership right now that I got about a week ago and I've played it maybe twice, for a total of an hour since then.

It's changed a lot over the years, and I just wanted to talk about the requirements, feel free to debate them all you want. I'll add some inaccurate tests too, to prove I'm not just making this up.

The tests don't go below medium settings, as it completely changes the graphics in every way once it is at the very bottom, but an explanation for how it ran will be added.

First, four test builds:

#1 ASUS eee PC 1201n
Intel Atom N330 1.66GHz Dual-Core + Hyperthreading (OC to 2.2GHz)
3GB DDR2 Kingston RAM
NVidia ION (9300GS) 256MB Graphics Chip
Hitachi 250GB 2.5"

Overall result was about 25 FPS normally, at about 15 FPS in areas like the GE with a lot of people. Not suitable for PKing or dangerous quests. This was at medium settings, with ground textures on. At lowest settings it was around 40 FPS constantly, so very playable like this for all situations, but the tiny screen size at these settings aren't suitable for PKing.

-

#2 MacBook Pro Early 2006
Intel Core Duo 2.0GHz
2GB DDR2 Kingston RAM
ATi X1650 256MB Underclocked
WD Scorpio Blue 320GB

Very playable, even at the maximum graphics. At max in Windows 7 mode it dips down to around 20 FPS in the GE, but otherwise playable all over. In Snow Leopard it's fine on the highest graphics in OpenGL mode. Very surprising since it gets around 35 FPS in CSS.

-

#3 Current Gaming Build
*Specs in signature system*

Perfect all over. Nothing else needed to be said.

After using some other systems from friends, I've worked out the minimum requirements would be around this:

Core 2 Duo 2GHz +
- Atom CPUs don't do too well, and only the Dual-Core Atom CPUs make the game playable.
- Dual core is now needed to run this game smoothly, a Pentium 4 processor will no longer play the game at the highest settings with 60 FPS.

2GB RAM +
- If you are on Windows XP, you should manage to pull off 1GB but 2GB is the bare minimum for Windows Vista / 7 to play this game. I just get whole system jitters etc. due to the OS taking up all of the RAM.

Any mid-level graphics card with 256MB VRAM.
- If you don't have Aero enabled then 128MB should be good enough for Windowed mode, but I'd be safe with the 256MB. This could be a lot lower, but the lowest I could find was a 256MB.
- A mid level is definitely needed for the highest settings. Medium settings would require at least a GT220 to run well, a GT210 does not run the game very well at high graphics settings. This is no exaggeration.

Any storage device, does not make a difference as it's browser based.

So that's the general outline of what I think you would need to play it. Mac OSX is very good for playing this game, but I think I'd still stick to Windows.

This was just to point out how far it's come and what kind of system you need now, which is a change to the old 400mhz CPU, 64MB RAM that used to be needed.

Runescape plays on pretty much any machine. lol

The graphics are quite respectable for a java/browser based game though when you play them on high. I recently started playing again since I recovered my lvl 87 account from 7 years ago.

I wouldn't say it plays on any machine really... it lags on most laptops and some none-gaming builds. Try playing maximum graphics in fullscreen and you can see some lag on a few types of systems.

Nice with the account though, I've played it on and off for about 6 years, but never that heavily really.

Yeah, it's extremely demanding for laptops that aren't built for gaming (GTX460 etc.)

It has very good graphics actually, just a few glitches due to it being Java but it's still very good at max.

i would say minimum specs for the game to be maxed is
dual core (pentium, or athlon)
1GB ram
8600 gt or amd equivalent.
the max fps for the game is 50fps just for the record. (just tested it at lowest settings and tested again with highest settings at 3840x1080 res frames didn't change) this was at the ge?

For maxed then I'd say 8600GT is a bit too far, my X1650 runs it at max, which is sorta weird, maybe AMD / ATi runs this game better.

And the maximum FPS isn't 50, you can change it. I've had 70 FPS+ last time I checked. Maybe you have VSync on somehow and a 50Hz monitor / TV.

got me on fps cap then, no vsync options in game monitors are 60 and vsync is forced off in nvidia control panel.
never goes higher or lower though lol
