Hey steven. I saved this thread to reply back for when I went back to two-way SLI. Here are my results from the average of three runs with the settings you used:

Average Framerate: 56.00
Max. Framerate: 242.78
Min. Framerate: 10.64

My results seem to be in line with what you are experiencing, so to me, you're in the normal range.

Like others have mentioned, I would chalk Guru's results up to the fact that they are using a barebones system that has little to no other software inside, aside from the benchmarks. It's also why world class benchmarkers also tweak the hell out of their OS's to run as few processes and services as possible in order to eek every last drop of performance out of their hardware.

Why would you build a high end rig for SLI.......based around a motherboard that doesn't have 2 x16 PCIE slots?

Bandwidth has very little impact on performance until you actually reach a significantly higher resolution. It's only at around 4MP do you begin to really see any appreciable differences show, but of course the higher the resolution scales, the bigger the differences. At 1080p, there's hardly a cause for concern.

Bandwidth seems to make a decent difference. Same settings as theturbofd with his 480s at 800 vs my 470s at 800. Guessing hes running x8/x8 iirc thats what 1155 maxes at?

Here is a more recent article as well showing Sandy Bridge (which the Northbridge physically has less PCIe lanes, even with the help of the NF200 chipset) beating out a Nehalem, which has more physical bandwidth lanes:

A quote from the above article, and note the bolded part:

The take away from all of this is that on a single 1080p/1200p monitor you are highly unlikely to notice performance throttling due to bandwidth limitations. In higher resolutions though, the landscape will then change, but this is not the case in the OP's situation.

Guess it's some other strange variable giving me the same performance as his 480s then

I'm not sure.

But just for giggles, I lowered my resolution to 1080p and kept all other settings the same. I actually gained a few frames on the average over my 1200p results:

Average Framerate: 60.67
Max. Framerate: 269.91
Min. Framerate: 8.82

A smidgen over 4 fps to be exact. Not exactly significant, but it goes to show that every little advantage helps when it comes to running the intense GPU hog known as Metro 2033.

EDIT:

Similarly, I overclocked my 580's to 900MHz and results show a similar disparity in resolution versus performance.

1080p:

Average Framerate: 65.67
Max. Framerate: 277.24
Min. Framerate: 4.29

1200p:

Average Framerate: 60.33
Max. Framerate: 284.90
Min. Framerate: 9.04

Interesting how a small bump in resolution can make a noticeable difference.
