Overclocking Phenom II "B50" - some issues

Thread Starter
I'm trying to give some more power to my aging CPU. Originally it was X2 550, but it successfully unlocks into quad-core and works fine for a long time now.

Today using latest AMD Overdrive I've tried to add 300 MHz more using multiplier (from 15.5 to 17, 3100 MHz to 3400) and tested in ArmA2. After a minute of playing (so it had no time to overheat or anything) textures started to disappear, FPS started dropping to zero and upon exiting back into Win7 windows and buttons started to have visual corruption.

What can be the cause of it? Unstable unlocked cores at higher freq? Not enough voltage? Or just an unfit CPU for OC?

I would suggest leaving AMD overdrive alone and overclock from your BIOS.

If your overclock is corrupting that much within windows I very much doubt you will be able to boot at 3400Mhz without more volts.

try a multi of 16.5 with everything else at stock and see if you are stable within windows (stress all cores with prime 95 or intel burn test for 10 mins or so.)

if your not stable than try adding a little Vcore (bump it up by one notch at a time, but don't go over 1.55v) until you get stable.

My B50 tops out at 3.7Ghz @ 1.475v.

I'm running 2x 560 unlocked to 4x like you did. My chip had a speed of 3.3ghz but right now I have it running at 4375.3 MHZ and it's stable. I will probably go a bit higher. I have my bios set for 230 on a manual overclock and then I used AMD overdrive. Without AMD overdrive I have taken the board to 250 without problems but the combination seems to work best for me. The one big difference is I upgraded my motherboard to a biostar TA890fxe. I was running an athlon 630 and I was able to get a lot more speed out of it with a newer motherboard designed for overclocking. My voltage is at 1.525 volts which the motherboard set for me. Make sure your cooling is up to high speed. Even at these speeds I'm only running around 94f or lower than body temperature.
