Need Recommendations for New Monitor

Thread Starter
I have read and searched about monitors to find the one that's right for me but I have a few specific questions on them.

First of all, the price needs to stay in the area of $100-$200.

What is the best size to quality ratio in terms of gaming monitors? Most things I've read suggest going with a 23"-24". I'm trying to get used to playing on similar size monitors that are used at LAN events as I will be competing in some w/ my team for GOW3 on Xbox and it seems they normally use from 22"-24" screens. (I believe that MLG uses 23" ASUS VH236H's, but correct me if I'm wrong?)

Should I go for a TN Panel or IPS Panel and 60hz or 120hz? Once again, I keep reading extremely varied opinions. My understanding seems to be that a top tier TN Panel would be better than a cheap/budget IPS Panel for gaming. In regards to 60hz or 120hz, most made it out to be like 120hz was only useful for HIGH frames per second games. I will be using this to game on my Xbox 360 which I believe only runs at 30 fps. I've read that using an unnecessarily fast monitor w/ a slow rig can cause additional issues.

Do I buy LED Backlit or no?

Which Brand(s) and Model(s) will have the BEST video quality and suit my needs in my price range?

Need to figure this out soon so I can get it ordered this morning.

Thanks!!!
Gideon

I would say go for a TN panel. I think IPS is really only useful for graphic designers who need really accurate colors. For best game performance (i.e. minimizing input lag and ghosting) TN is still the best.

If you are ONLY using this for Xbox, then you only need 60hz. If I'm not mistaken, you use HDMI with Xbox, and I think HDMI is limited to only 60hz for 1080p video.

As for specific monitors, there are plenty of Asus monitors within that price range, that are 23-24", and have low input lag. I don't think LED or not is a major factor if you are just worried about gaming.

here's the newegg search page. Any of the top VH series monitors look good to me.

if MLG are using the 23" ASUS VH236H's and you are trying to practice on small monitors for LAN events, why not buy the 23" ASUS VH236H?

Definitely a good idea. It's on the newegg link i posted above.

How often does MLG change their monitors? One thing is, the OP will be going to LANs (probably not MLG), so they may not use the same monitor as MLG does.

Thanks for much for the responses!

Going w/ the ASUS VH236H definitely makes sense but as Podunk said, I'm sure the majority of my events will be Non-MLG so the size is the main factor so I can get used to it since I have a big screen now which is vastly different.

I should stick w/ 23" though, right? 24" is tempting but I'm afraid it will throw me off a bit in terms of aiming and such.

Can anyone look through Wal-Mart's selection and make a recommendation? I have a 15% discount for there and a gift card so I'd prefer to order from them. They have ASUS, Samsung, LG, etc. so I'm hoping they carry what I need.

Thanks!!!!

Here is the link to Wal-Mart's Selection of ASUS, Samsung, and LG Monitors (the only top tier brands they carry) in 23"-24" so if you guys can please look them over and let me know what you think the best option(s) is, I'd REALLY appreciate it.

I would go for the vh236h. It's the only one of those that we know can be used for gaming. If you want a 24" then go for one, I don't think it will affect your aim at all vs the 23".

Would the VH236H be better than the VH238H?

From what I understand, the 238 has LED Backlighting while the 236 is CCFL. LED is supposed to be the superior option and they're the same price, but many ppl seem to still get the 236 over the 238 so I'm not sure of why?

Thanks for the help!
