Dissapointed in my new Sennheiser HD 595's :( - Page 3

Source is far more important than amp, especially with 595s due to their low impedance.

It's also entirely possible, you don't have an ear for it. Some of it is literally just "how you are" and the other half of it is acquired listening. I hear major differences now between different amps/setups, but 2 years ago, I couldnt tell much of a difference at all.

Could be placebo, could be me listening closer, who knows.

I would try a couple difference sources before you give up on them, after 30-40 hours of listening, those 595s should be sounding pretty clear/crisp in the highs/mids and giving your decent response on the lower base frequencies. Your not gonna get monster bass out of them, but you should find yourself enjoying just how low the frequencies actually go.

Or maybe you just don't have an ear for it? Not a lot of people do, hence the reason everyone uses crappy ipod earbuds lol

eeeenope.

Does not need an amp.

eeeenope. Your headphones should be higher priced than your sound card.

Could be this, but typically people can at least hear some distinguishable differences. Especially between 20 dollar Koss earphones and Sennheisers.

There are a few things that come to mind.

1) You're not using the headphones for the intended purposes they were designed for. For instance, you're trying to listen to electronica, dubstep or rap on these and they're just not doing it for you.

2) Your sound card may not be good enough. I know the Platinum series is sort of dated, but I would think you should be able to hear enough of a difference with it. Perhaps not. Never used or heard a Platinum Xfi card.

3) You haven't listened long enough to your headphones. The hype got you excited for mind blowing sound when in reality the subtleties were less apparent. You should have significant clarity improvement. Listen to string instruments on your HD595s and see how they sound compared to your Koss'.

The sound stage should be much better than your Koss'. Sennheiser has a more in your face sound stage than my AD700s, but if you're wondering "What sound stage" then it's likely your sound card.

Also, make sure not to have any whacky sound modifying effects on like CMSS-3D or "Entertainment Mode" or whatever else. Those distort sound and often times in not good ways. Make sure you EQ is flat, but if that bores you feel free to play with each slider one at a time to make it sound the way you enjoy.

What genres of music are you listening to? I tried out the 598 awhile ago, unfortunatly I only had onboard at the time, and I hated it. It sucked the life out of my metal collection.
The problem could also be the sound card. It was obviously underpowered off the onboard sound, enough that it sounded 'grainy' and 'congested'. My current headphones have the same underpowered sound on my Essence but not to the same extent, just because something is only 32 or 40ohm doesn't mean that it doesn't need an amp.

I thought I needed to leave the CMSS-3D on though as that was what made games sound like surround sound?

And yes I mainly listen to hard rock/metal.

It will....but if you leave it on it makes music sound like crap.

Turn off CMSS3D, crystalizer, etc. for music.

Listen to 595 for a few hours. Then listen to your $20 KOSS again. Listen to your 595 again.

There should be a difference. That said, 595 may be too smooth sounding for aggressive rock music.

i never liked sennhesiers, its like they are engineered to sound as unimpressive as possible (well neutrality has historically been their strong suit) you can expect the texture of the sound to have better resolution but you really cant expect to hear something new from headphones that are designed to be inaudible themselves.

u shoulda went for a denon adh-1100. cheaper and sound just as good as the 595

Sennheisers are made to sound musical, and as some put it make music sound "beautiful", I don't want my metal to sound "beautiful".

About the gaming mode, on my Essence I've stopped using dolby, it adds an artificial effect to it that emulates different sized rooms, any games that take place outside sound a bit off. Like most things audio, its preference I would try it on and off, though for music I don't know anyone who would leave it on.
