Two gtx 295's good enough to hold me over?

Thread Starter
Would two gtx 295's be enough to hold me over while waiting for the 79xx or 6xx series? I could most likely pick up two for below $200 but I'm a bit hesitant on if they'd have enough ram. I'm also not sure if something else might be a better deal. I'd be gaming on 1080p with a 2500k.

The amount of vram is not the issue, unless you wanna play BF3 I recommend you get a dx11 single gpu card. If you could get a 6970 or 570 used that would be much better option and you'll save a lot on the electricity bill.
The 7xxx series are near, November, so you should wait.

I wouldn't bother with those, and I wouldn't get a 69xx or a 570.

If you are for sure going to purchase 7xxx or 6xx cards, I would point you in the 6850/6870 or the 560Ti category. My 5850 runs BF3 at high settings, ~60 frames.

You would save more money buying one of those suggested cards to spend money on water blocks to get your 7xxx cards under water

Do you already own a PSU capable of powering two gtx295's? That will be a significant cost factor as well.

I agree with BinaryDemon, you might need a bigger PSU. I'd say holdout on buying since the 7xxx series will be coming soon. If you are unable to wait, I'd suggest as rockosmodlife said, the 6850/70 or the 560Ti will do you well.

I had assumed that the 295 had dx11 which I guess was stupid on my part. I think I'll go with a 6850/70. I know that there's rumors of the 7xxx series coming out soon but I'll be holding out for the 79xx series which I'm guessing won't be coming out that soon and since it's just a rumor I don't want to base my decision on it to much. Also seeing as kepler has been delayed until 2012 I don't mind spending about $200 for a decent card to let me hold out until benchmarks come out and the cards are refined if needed.

I'm not quite sure I follow your post. Do you have any GTX 295's currently? If you have one and are asking if another would be a good idea to hold you over then sure, why not?

But, if you have none and are going to buy 2 used ones for $200 then it is a horrible idea. For that price you could get 2 GTX 460s which will have DX11.

Even a single 460 GTX for $100 would be a good hold-me-over card if you are waiting for the next series.

like others have suggested, a 6850/70 or a 560ti is your best option at this point. Or if you can find a used 5850/GTX470 would be good options as well.

Wait until 6xx/7xxx. You won't get a big upgrade unless you SLI two of the high end cards anyways, which is not worth it at all. You're not missing out on much.
