Looking for i5 or i7 laptop - $1000

Thread Starter
What is your maximum budget?
$1000

What country are you in?
USA
What will be the uses of this laptop?
Mostly running Windows and Linux virtual machines with some Linux kernel compiling. Also light gaming.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
No brand loyalty. I need something reliable.

What screen size do you require?
No special size
What screen resolution do you require?
As close as I can get to 1080p.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
any condition is okay
How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
4 hours under optimal conditions. This will not be used under battery power very often.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
Portal 2 1024x768. Nothing really special
What operating system do you need? (if any)
I need to use Windows 7, possibly with a Linux Mint dual boot.
Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
No special style, but durability is a must.
How much hard drive space do you need?
This is the sticking point. I'd like an SSD boot drive, with a 750GB-1TB secondary drive.
Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
USB 3.0 is a must, webcam would be nice, but is not mandatory. Wireless N and gigabit Ethernet, at least 8GB RAM. AES-NI instruction set (hence the CPU specification).
Is there anything else we need to know?
I'm used to carrying a Toshiba Tecra M9 with an extended battery, so I don't mind if it is a little heavy.

I recommend The MSI GE620-021US Notebook.
It's a pretty powerful laptop, has a 1080p monitor, Uses Windows 7, has an i7 processor, USB 3.0, GT540M (pretty decent for gaming) and 8 GB of RAM.
You can buy it here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834152258
You can also buy this one:

The ASUS N53 is only $900, but you can buy an SSD with the remaining $100. It's 1080p, and has an i5 2410M (2.30GHz). (it only has 6 GB RAM, but you can upgrade to more RAM, and It also has a blue ray combo.
And you can Also try this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834230174
It has 1600x900 screen resolution, but it has 8GB of RAM, Dual 500 GB Drives (you can take out one 500 GB drive and replace it with an SSD) and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 560M.

The ASUS machine is the best of those three. Hands down, grab it before it goes away! O_O

Check slickdeals.net, I managed to get a nice 15" HP dv6t SE with an i5-2410M, AMD 6770M, 6 GB RAM, Blu-ray drive for $750, and it came with a free Xbox 360.

After selling the 360, the laptop cost a net $600! The mobile graphics chip is surprisingly good, it can play BF:BC2 pretty darn well on medium settings.
